Brooklyn’s community calendar is stacked this week, with free family programming, cultural events, and community board meetings where residents can weigh in on what’s happening in their neighborhoods. Whether you want to make a zine with your kids, browse a marketplace of local artisans, or speak up about environmental reviews affecting your block, there’s something on the schedule for you.
Community Joy Family Day at BRIC House — April 11
The Legal Aid Society and BRIC Arts Media are teaming up on Saturday, April 11 for Community Joy Family Day, a free event celebrating Legal Aid’s 150th anniversary of service in New York City. The event runs from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at BRIC House, 647 Fulton Street in Downtown Brooklyn.
From 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., families can enjoy live music by Building Beats DJ Pr3tty P, readings by a local author and illustrator, and interactive art activities for all ages. Booklyn will lead hands-on sessions focused on zine-making and vision board creation, and the Brooklyn Book Bodega will be giving away free books. At 1:00 p.m., Brooklyn Org and The Legal Aid Society host a community forum where residents can share their needs and their vision for the Brooklyn they want to build.
Brooklyn Museum First Saturday: “Inkwells” — Already Happened April 4
If you missed the April First Saturday at the Brooklyn Museum, mark your calendar for next month. The April edition, titled “Inkwells,” celebrated National Poetry Month with performances, readings, and art-making inspired by global literary traditions. Highlights included an all-vinyl dance party called “Of the Sun,” blending disco, Afrobeat, Zouk, salsa, and funk, plus a marketplace featuring handmade items from artists and vendors across Brooklyn. First Saturdays are free with registration and run from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m.
Brooklyn Community Board 6: Environmental Review Session — April 8
Community Board 6 is holding an Environmental Review Infosession on Wednesday, April 8 at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary & St. Stephen Roman Catholic Church, 125 Summit Street. This session focuses on the Brooklyn Marine Terminal Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) process — a major review that could affect the Red Hook and Carroll Gardens waterfront for years to come. If you live in the CB6 area, this is your chance to learn about the project and ask questions before formal public comment periods begin.
