Gantry Plaza State Park is one of Queens’ most underrated waterfront gems — 12 acres of East River esplanade, restored 1920s gantries, four fishing piers, two dog runs, and an unobstructed Manhattan skyline view. But knowing how to use the park — permits, dog hours, restroom reliability, parking workarounds — is a different skill. This is the service guide Long Island City residents and regular visitors actually need.

Address & Park Location

The park spans Center Boulevard between 46th and 54th Avenues along the East River in Long Island City, Queens. The main entrance and primary mailing address is:

The park is administered by New York State Parks, not NYC Parks — an important distinction when you need to file complaints or request permits (see below).

Park Hours

Gantry Plaza State Park is open daily 8:00 AM – 10:00 PM, year-round. The piers and esplanade are accessible during those hours. Restrooms may have reduced availability outside peak season (see Restroom section below).

Getting There: Transit (Recommended)

Gantry Plaza is easily reached without a car and is the recommended approach — parking near the park is limited and can be expensive on weekends.

• 7 Train: Vernon Blvd–Jackson Ave station (first stop after Grand Central from Manhattan). Walk west on 50th Avenue toward the East River, approximately 8 minutes.
• G Train: 21st St–Jackson Ave station. Walk three blocks west toward the promenade, approximately 10 minutes.
• Bus: B61 and Q103 stop on Vernon Boulevard at Jackson Avenue, about 5 minutes’ walk from the park entrance.
• East River Ferry: The Long Island City stop at Borden Avenue lands you steps from the park’s southern end. Seasonal schedules apply — check NYC Ferry for current timetables.
• LIRR: Hunters Point Ave station or the Borden Avenue stop; walk north toward the park.

Parking

There is no dedicated on-site parking lot at Gantry Plaza State Park. Options nearby:

• Street parking: Available on Center Blvd, 48th Ave, and side streets — metered on weekdays, free on Sundays in most spots. Competition is high on weekends.
• Parking garage at 45-45 Center Blvd (LIC Landing / 5 Pointz area): Paid garage, approximately 5-minute walk to the park.
• 5th Street garages: Several commercial lots along 5th Street and Jackson Ave offer all-day rates, typically $15–$30 depending on day and time.

Practical advice: On summer weekends, transit is faster than driving. If you must drive, arrive before 10:00 AM to secure street parking.

Restrooms: Location & Reliability

Restrooms are located near the playground on the northern section of the park and adjacent to the main pavilion near 48th Avenue. Hours generally mirror park hours (8 AM – 10 PM), but restroom access can be reduced during winter months — call (718) 786-6385 to confirm availability before a cold-weather visit with young children or those with accessibility needs.

There are no restrooms directly on the piers. The closest facilities to the pier 4 fishing area are the pavilion restrooms near 48th Avenue.

Permits: Picnic Areas, Events & Large Groups

Groups of any size that want to reserve a picnic area or hold an organized event must obtain a permit through NYS Parks. Here is the current fee schedule:

How to apply: Email your permit request to Soleyl.Ovalle@parks.ny.gov with your desired date, group size, activity description, and contact information. The park recommends requesting at least two weeks in advance for weekdays and four weeks for weekend dates during peak season (May–September).

Important restriction: Cooking grills of any kind are prohibited throughout the park at all times. There are no BBQ areas at Gantry Plaza State Park. If you are planning a cookout, this is not the venue — nearby Astoria Park or Flushing Meadows-Corona Park have designated BBQ areas.

Dog Rules & Off-Leash Hours

Gantry Plaza State Park is dog-friendly on paved surfaces but has specific restrictions that trip up new visitors.

Where Dogs Are Allowed (Leashed)

Leashed dogs are permitted on all paved pathways and plazas throughout the park during regular hours (8 AM – 10 PM). Maximum leash length: 6 feet.

Where Dogs Are NOT Allowed

• All grass, garden, and landscaped areas
• All four piers
• Playgrounds and playground perimeters
• Any area posted with a no-dogs sign

Off-Leash Dog Runs

The park has two designated off-leash dog runs:

• North dog run: Corner of 48th Ave and Vernon Blvd
• South dog run: Center Blvd between 46th and 47th Avenues

Dog run rules: Dogs must be unleashed with prong, spike, and choke collars removed. Maximum 3 dogs per handler. Dogs must be licensed and up to date on rabies vaccination. Owners must clean up immediately after their dogs.

Off-leash hours in the dog runs are during regular park hours (8 AM – 10 PM), not subject to the NYC Parks off-leash schedule (which does not apply to state parks).

Fishing at Gantry Plaza

Gantry Plaza has four piers extending into the East River, numbered 1 through 4 from north to south.

• Fishing: Permitted from all four piers. Common catches include striped bass, bluefish, and various bottom fish.
• Crabbing: Permitted at Pier 4 (southernmost) only.
• Fish cleaning table: Located at Pier 4.
• Licensing: A valid New York State fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older. Subject to NYS DEC regulations — check current fishing advisories for East River species at dec.ny.gov.

Note: Dogs are not permitted on any of the piers, even leashed.

The park is open year-round, but services vary by season:
