This weekend is stacked. Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, May 10, and New York is going all out — Japan comes to Central Park, Brooklyn throws open its arms for a multi-day art crawl, Governors Island debuts one of the most exciting new waterfront venues the city has seen in years, and Smorgasburg does what it does every weekend: feed thousands of very happy people. Here’s everything worth showing up for.
🌸 Don’t Miss: Japan Parade & Street Fair — Saturday, May 9
The 5th Annual Japan Parade takes over the Upper West Side on Saturday in what is easily one of the most visually spectacular free events of the spring. The street fair kicks off at 11:00 AM on 72nd Street between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue, with taiko drummers, traditional dance performances, Japanese food vendors, cosplay, and martial arts demonstrations filling the block until 5:00 PM.
Then at 1:00 PM, the parade itself marches down Central Park West from 81st Street to 67th Street. This year’s Grand Marshal is internationally acclaimed manga artist Acky Bright, known for his signature “kawakakkoii” (cute and cool) aesthetic — he also designed Japan Parade’s very first official mascot. The whole thing is FREE, no tickets needed. Just show up and find a good spot on Central Park West before noon.
72nd Street between Central Park West & Columbus Ave, Manhattan. Street fair 11am–5pm, parade 1pm. Free admission.
🎨 Atlantic Avenue Art Crawl — May 9–17, Brooklyn
Running across a full 1.5-mile stretch from Brooklyn Heights to the waterfront, the Atlantic Avenue Art Crawl transforms the corridor into a city-wide gallery. Around 150 Brooklyn artists are showing work inside 70+ participating shops, restaurants, and galleries along the route — it’s self-guided, it’s free, and it runs daily through May 17 (noon to 6pm). This is the kind of thing you stumble through for two hours and somehow spend five. Start near the waterfront end, work your way up, and duck into every shop that has art in the window.
Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn Heights to the waterfront. Daily May 9–17, 12–6pm. Free.
🦞 Six Coasts Grand Opening — Governors Island, Saturday May 9
Smorgasburg’s most ambitious project ever just arrived. Six Coasts is a full-scale seasonal restaurant and bar that opens on Governors Island on May 9, sitting right on the waterfront with sweeping views of Lower Manhattan and New York Harbor. Chef Scotley Innis (previously of The Continent at Hotel Indigo Williamsburg) is running a Pan-American seafood menu deeply rooted in Caribbean culinary traditions — think fresh, coastal, and unlike anything else on the island. This is the spot for a ferry ride with a purpose.
Governors Island, accessible by ferry from Lower Manhattan or Brooklyn Bridge Park. Opening May 9, 2026.
🍜 Smorgasburg Is Running All Weekend
The city’s greatest outdoor eating ritual is in full swing. Smorgasburg Williamsburg runs Saturdays at the East River waterfront, and Smorgasburg Prospect Park runs Sundays — both from 11am to 6pm, both free to enter. The 2026 lineup includes 74 vendors, 22 of them brand new, with a heavy focus on the city’s immigrant food traditions. Whether you’re doing Japan Parade in the morning or just want an excuse to be outside with food in hand, Smorgasburg is a reliable anchor for your weekend plan.
Smorgasburg Williamsburg: East River Waterfront, Brooklyn. Saturdays 11am–6pm. Smorgasburg Prospect Park: Prospect Park West entrance, Brooklyn. Sundays 11am–6pm. Free admission.
💐 Show Brooklyn Some Love Fest — Saturday, May 9, Downtown Brooklyn
Downtown Brooklyn is celebrating Mother’s Day weekend with the Show Brooklyn Some Love Fest, featuring flower mandalas, custom poetry on-demand, and a Brooklyn-themed photo booth. It’s a community-first celebration that doubles as a genuinely lovely way to spend a Saturday if you’re heading into Brooklyn already. Bring your mom — or just bring yourself.
Downtown Brooklyn. Saturday, May 9. Check local listings for exact hours and location details.
Weekend Planning Notes
Sunday is Mother’s Day (May 10), so the city’s parks, gardens, and waterfront spots are going to be especially packed in the afternoon. If you’re doing Smorgasburg Prospect Park or heading to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, aim to arrive early. For the Japan Parade on Saturday, stake out your spot on Central Park West by 12:30 PM at the latest — it fills up fast along the parade route.
