If you live in New York City and want to know what is on your ballot between now and the second week of July, the short answer is one election: the June 23, 2026 Primary Election. Every other date worth marking on your calendar over the next sixty days is tied to it — registration cutoffs, mail-ballot deadlines, and a nine-day early voting window that runs from June 13 through June 21.
This guide is a plain-English civic calendar for the period from May 10, 2026 through July 9, 2026, drawn entirely from the NYC Board of Elections. We have organized it the way most New Yorkers actually use it: what is happening, when it is happening, what you need to do to participate, and where to find official confirmation. No editorial framing, no candidate analysis — just the dates, in the order they will arrive.
The Headline: June 23, 2026 Primary Election
The Primary Election is a statewide event, but in New York City it carries unusual weight because primary outcomes in heavily one-party districts often determine the eventual general-election winner. Polls are open from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at your assigned poll site.
Primary elections in New York are closed: only voters enrolled in a party can vote in that party’s primary. If you are registered as an “unaffiliated” or “blank” voter, you are not eligible to participate in the partisan primary contests. Your party enrollment, if you wish to change it, was governed by an earlier statewide deadline; the Board of Elections page on party affiliation documents the rules and timing.

Nothing else on the NYC Board of Elections public calendar falls inside the May 10 – July 9 window. The next major event after the Primary is the General Election on November 3, 2026, which is outside the scope of this sixty-day guide. We will publish the Fall civic calendar later in the year as those deadlines come into view.
Registration: Your First Deadline Is June 13
To vote in the June 23 Primary, you must already be registered in New York and enrolled in the party whose primary you wish to vote in. If you are not yet registered — or if you have moved since the last time you voted — you have until Saturday, June 13, 2026 to either register in person at your county Board of Elections office or to have your mail/online application received by that office.
That is a receipt deadline, not a postmark deadline. A mail application postmarked June 13 but arriving June 15 is too late. The Board of Elections recommends submitting at least a week before the cutoff to give the application time to reach the office and be processed. The official registration deadlines page at vote.nyc is the primary source and is updated for each election.
You can check whether you are already registered, and at what address, using the Board of Elections’ Am I Registered? lookup tool. If your address is out of date, the registration form is also a change-of-address form for an existing voter — you do not need to file a separate document.
Early Voting: Nine Days, Citywide
Every registered NYC voter who is eligible to vote in the June 23 Primary may cast their ballot during the early voting period, which runs June 13 through June 21, 2026. Hours vary by day — some days open at 8:00 a.m., others not until noon — and they are listed above. Your early voting site is assigned by your address and may be different from your Election Day poll site, so confirm it through the Board of Elections’ poll-site lookup before you go.
Early voting in New York uses the same paper ballot you would receive on Election Day, fed into the same kind of scanner. There is no separate “early voting ballot.” If you vote early, you cannot also vote on June 23 — the system flags you as having already voted.
For the full step-by-step on locating your site, what to bring, and how mail/absentee voting fits in, see our NYC polling site and early voting guide.
Mail and Absentee Ballots
New York offers two parallel mail-ballot tracks: traditional absentee voting (for voters who meet a statutory excuse such as illness, disability, travel, or incarceration on a non-felony conviction) and Early Mail Voting (no excuse required, available to any registered voter who applies in time). The application deadlines are the same: Friday, June 13, 2026 for online or mail applications, and Monday, June 22, 2026 for in-person applications at your county Board of Elections office.
Once you have your ballot, you have four ways to return it for the June 23 Primary:
- Mail it, ensuring it is postmarked no later than June 23, 2026.
- Drop it at a county Board of Elections office no later than 9:00 p.m. on June 23, 2026.
- Drop it at any early voting poll site in your county between June 13 and June 21, 2026.
- Drop it at any Election Day poll site on June 23, 2026, no later than 9:00 p.m.
These return options are confirmed on the Board of Elections’ All Important Dates page.
What About Ranked-Choice Voting?
New York City uses ranked-choice voting (RCV) in primary and special elections for citywide and local offices — Mayor, Public Advocate, Comptroller, Borough President, and City Council. On June 23, 2026, voters in primaries for these offices will be able to rank up to five candidates in order of preference. RCV does not apply to state-level or federal primaries on the same ballot, which use traditional “pick one” rules.
If you have never voted in an RCV race, our explainer on how ranked-choice voting works in NYC walks through the ballot mechanics and the round-by-round tabulation. The Board of Elections also maintains a Ranked Choice Voting overview page with sample ballots.
What Is Not on the Calendar (Yet)
Two clarifications about events that are not in this sixty-day window, since residents often ask:
- The April 28, 2026 Special Election for the 3rd City Council District in Manhattan has already concluded. It is not on the May–July calendar.
- The November 3, 2026 General Election is outside this window. Registration for the General is open until October 24, 2026, with early voting from October 24 through November 1. We will publish a dedicated General Election calendar closer to those dates.

Where the Dates Come From
Every date in this guide is taken directly from the NYC Board of Elections at vote.nyc. The primary references are the Upcoming Elections 2026 page, the Registration Deadlines page, and the All Important Dates page. If a date in this article ever conflicts with what the Board of Elections publishes, the Board of Elections governs. We update this calendar weekly during election season; this version reflects what was published as of May 10, 2026.
