Astoria Park Pool NYC: Hours, Permits, Parking & Everything You Need to Know
The complete service guide to Astoria Park Pool — NYC’s largest free outdoor pool. Hours, what to bring, parking, dog rules, permits, accessibility, and 311 reporting numbers.

Astoria Park Pool: The Complete NYC Service Guide (Hours, Permits, Rules & What to Bring)

Astoria Park Pool is the largest outdoor public pool in New York City — a 330-by-165-foot WPA-era landmark built in 1936 under the Hell Gate Bridge in Queens. Admission is free every summer, and the pool is open to every New Yorker without a recreation center membership. This guide covers everything you need to plan a visit: hours, what to bring, parking, restrooms, dog rules, permits, accessibility, and who to call when something goes wrong.

Address & How to Get There

Address: 19th Street & 23rd Drive, Astoria, Queens, NY 11102
Pool phone: (718) 626-8620
Official park page: nycgovparks.org/parks/astoria-park

The pool sits on the northeast end of Astoria Park, directly beneath the Hell Gate Bridge span. The surrounding 60-acre park runs along the East River waterfront between the Hell Gate and RFK (Triborough) Bridges.

By subway: Take the N or W train to Astoria–Ditmars Blvd and walk approximately 10 minutes southwest on 31st Street to the park entrance at Hoyt Avenue North.

By bus: The Q19A and Q101 stop along Hoyt Avenue North adjacent to the park.

Hours & Seasonal Schedule

Pool season: Late June through Labor Day (typically opens the last Saturday of June; the citywide 2026 opening is Saturday, June 27).

Daily pool hours:

  • 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
  • 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

The pool is closed from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. daily for mandatory cleaning. Plan accordingly — the afternoon closure is strictly enforced and the lines to re-enter form fast.

Park hours: Astoria Park is open year-round from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. The pool area is only accessible during the summer season.

Pool closure alerts: Sign up for “Know Before You Go” via Notify NYC to receive text or email alerts about pool closures due to weather, water quality, or maintenance.

What to Bring (Pool Entry Requirements)

Astoria Pool is free, but there are firm entry requirements:

  • A sturdy padlock — required to use a locker. Luggage locks are not accepted. Combination or key locks work; if you don’t bring one, you cannot store belongings.
  • A swimsuit — street clothes and cutoffs are not permitted in the pool.
  • A towel and flip-flops are strongly recommended (the deck and locker room floors are shared public space).

Prohibited items: Food, glass bottles, electronic devices (including speakers), and newspapers are not permitted in the pool facility. Leave them in your car or at home — there is no secure storage for oversized items beyond lockers.

Admission: Free for all ages. No membership, registration, or ID required for general lap swim and recreational use.

Special programs: NYC Parks offers free swimming lessons and programming for teens, seniors, and people with disabilities throughout the summer season. Check nycgovparks.org/facilities/outdoor-pools for the current program calendar.

Restrooms

Astoria Park has multiple restroom facilities throughout the grounds:

  • Pool complex restrooms: Located inside the pool facility itself; accessible during pool hours (11 a.m. – 7 p.m.) as part of the locker room area.
  • Charybdis Playground restroom: A decorated one-story brick building with Art Deco lettering near the playground on the park’s south end. Open during general park hours.
  • Track-area restroom: Located east of the running track near the tennis courts.

Standard NYC Parks restroom hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for non-seasonal facilities; hours extend seasonally during summer. Conditions vary — report maintenance issues via 311.

Parking

Astoria Park has limited on-site parking, and street spots along Hoyt Avenue North fill quickly on hot summer days.

  • Main lot: Accessible off the corner of Hoyt Avenue North & 19th Street, just north of the running track. This is the closest lot to the pool entrance.
  • RFK Bridge underpass: Additional parking is available under the western end of the RFK (Triborough) Bridge along Hoyt Avenue North.
  • Street parking: Metered and alternate-side parking on surrounding streets. Check signs carefully — Queens DOT enforcement is active near the park on weekends.

Tip: For weekend visits in peak summer, arrive before 10:30 a.m. or use subway/bus. The N/W to Ditmars is the most reliable option on crowded days.

Permits: Pool, Fields & BBQ

Pool Access (Day Camps)

Individual visitors do not need a permit. However, licensed day camp operators must apply for a permit to bring groups to outdoor pools during the summer. Day camp swimming permits are issued through NYC Parks and require proof of licensure. Apply at nycgovparks.org/permits.

Fields & Courts

Astoria Park has tennis courts and athletic fields. Organized group use and league play require a field and court permit. Casual/individual use is first-come, first-served. Check real-time permit availability at the NYC Parks Field and Court Permit Map.

BBQ & Large Groups

Permitted BBQ areas exist within Astoria Park. Groups of 20 or more using a grill or portable BBQ equipment require a park permit. Apply online through the NYC Parks permit portal. Permits are free or low-cost depending on group size and area requested. Alcohol permits are a separate application.

All permits: nycgovparks.org/permits | Apply early — summer weekend slots book weeks in advance.

Dog Rules & Off-Leash Hours

Astoria Park is dog-friendly throughout most of the grounds, with clear rules:

Off-leash hours (designated areas only):

  • From park open (6:00 a.m.) until 9:00 a.m.
  • From 9:00 p.m. until park close (1:00 a.m.)

Leash rules: Outside of those hours and designated areas, dogs must be on a leash no longer than six feet at all times. You are legally required to carry and use a bag to clean up waste.

Where dogs are NOT allowed:

  • Swimming pools and pool facilities
  • Playgrounds
  • Ball fields
  • Basketball, handball, and tennis courts

Dogs must not chase or disturb birds, squirrels, or other wildlife. Violations are subject to NYC Parks fines enforced by Parks Enforcement Patrol officers.

Accessibility

Astoria Park’s open meadows and paved paths along the waterfront are navigable with a wheelchair or mobility device. The main park paths are generally flat.

However, the pool complex itself has limited ADA accessibility — the original 1936 WPA construction presents barriers in some areas of the locker rooms and pool deck. NYC Parks does offer adaptive swimming programs for visitors with disabilities; contact the pool directly at (718) 626-8620 to ask about accommodations before your visit.

To report an accessibility complaint: submit an ADA complaint via NYC311 or contact NYC Parks’ Americans with Disabilities Act Coordinator directly through nycgovparks.org/contact-parks.
