Bronx Community Events This Week: Book Clubs, Earth Day Prep, and a Candidates Forum

The Bronx community calendar is picking up steam this April, with a mix of cultural programming, environmental events, and civic engagement opportunities spread across the borough. From a literary gathering on the Grand Concourse to Earth Day celebrations along the Bronx River, here’s what’s coming up and how to get involved.

The Bronx Is Reading: Book Club and Independent Bookstore Day

The Bronx Is Reading, the borough’s homegrown literacy organization, has two events on the April calendar that book lovers won’t want to miss. Their monthly Bookish Gang Book Club is currently reading “Promises of Gold” by José Olivarez, and the club meets regularly at their bookstore, Lair of Dreams, on the Grand Concourse.

The bigger event is the 3rd Annual Bronx Independent Bookstore Day on Sunday, April 26 at the historic Andrew Freedman Home on the Grand Concourse. The day brings together Bronx-based bookstores in one space where you can browse curated selections, pick up merchandise, and enjoy giveaways and select author appearances. If you care about keeping independent bookselling alive in the Bronx, this is the event that makes it happen.

Black Maternal Health Week — April 16

On Thursday, April 16, the Tremont Neighborhood Health Action Center is hosting a Black Maternal Health Week event from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The program features presentations on maternal health resources, raffles, and even belly dancing. Black Maternal Health Week is a national observance, and this Bronx-based event brings the conversation directly to the community with practical resources and real-time engagement.

Bronx River Open House and Earth Day Celebrations

The Bronx River Alliance is hosting a Bronx River Open House on Saturday, April 25 from noon to 4:00 p.m. to celebrate Earth Day. The event offers a chance to explore the riverfront, learn about restoration efforts, and connect with environmental organizations working in the borough. The following day, Sunday, April 27, there’s another Earth Day celebration at the southern end of Lincoln Avenue.

For birders, the NYC Bird Alliance is hosting a guided birding session at Van Cortlandt Nature Center on Saturday, April 11 at 9:00 a.m. — a perfect way to kick off spring migration season in one of the Bronx’s best green spaces.

NYC Council District 8 Candidates Forum — April 26

On Sunday, April 26, a candidates forum for NYC Council District 8 takes place in Mott Haven and East Harlem. This is a chance for residents to hear directly from the people running to represent them on the City Council. Council District 8 covers the South Bronx and parts of East Harlem, and the forum is expected to cover housing, public safety, and economic development.

Community Board Meetings

The Bronx has 12 community boards, and most hold their general meetings on the fourth Wednesday of each month. For April, that puts most full-board meetings around April 22. Committee meetings happen throughout the month — check individual board websites for the latest schedules. Bronx Community Board 5, for example, can be reached at 718-364-2030 or bx05@cb.nyc.gov for a full schedule of April meetings.
