Brooklyn’s Earth Week is built around community gardens, neighborhood parks, and a handful of borough anchor events that manage to be free, family-friendly, and genuinely useful at the same time. If you want to plant something, learn something, or just spend a Saturday with your kids outdoors, there is a spot on the map for you this week.
Here is what is worth your time across the borough.
Brooklyn Bridge Park Earth Day Programming
Brooklyn Bridge Park is going all-in for Earth Day with programming led by its horticulture and education teams on Saturday, April 25. Expect hands-on volunteer opportunities, talks and workshops — including the popular “Ask A Gardener” Q&A and a “Build A Bird’s Nest” craft for kids — plus partner activities from local environmental nonprofits. The park staff know their stuff and are genuinely happy to answer questions about what you could plant on your fire escape or balcony.
Fort Greene Park Family Day
Fort Greene Park is hosting a family day dedicated to celebrating and caring for the Earth on Saturday, April 18, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is free, designed for families, and features workshops, crafts, and games organized by community organizations and neighbors. Kids who participate in 8 or more activity stations earn prizes — a nice carrot for getting them to slow down and try something new.
Atlantic Avenue Plant Giveaway
The Atlantic Avenue Business Improvement District is running a plant giveaway along with kids activities and education from the Nature Company on Hoyt Street between Atlantic Avenue and State Street. Free plants are a perennial crowd-pleaser, and the BID has been consistently generous with quantities in past years. Arrive early if you want first pick of the perennials.
GreenThumb Community Garden Volunteer Days
Brooklyn has one of the largest concentrations of GreenThumb community gardens in the city, and many of them are hosting volunteer workdays throughout April. A few to know about:
- Olive Street Garden — Earth Day open house with welcome tours and a getting-started-with-seeds session
- Berry Street Garden — a clean-up day in celebration of Earth Day
- Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park — evening beautification at Bushwick Inlet Park from 6 to 8 p.m., free
Street Tree Care With FAB Fulton
If you live in Bed-Stuy or near Fulton Street, FAB Fulton is organizing street tree care in Council District 35 from 10 a.m. to noon. Volunteers clean, care for, and mulch the street trees that keep the neighborhood shaded and breathable. It is a two-hour commitment with immediately visible results — and a good way to meet the block.

Pick Your Neighborhood
If you live near DUMBO or Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn Bridge Park is the obvious anchor. Fort Greene and Clinton Hill families should aim for Fort Greene Park on April 18. Bed-Stuy neighbors can pair the FAB Fulton tree care morning with an afternoon at a GreenThumb garden nearby — and if you are looking for more on the neighborhood, our Bed-Stuy spotlight covers what else is changing along Fulton.
For residents keeping an eye on local governance, the Brooklyn Community Board calendar is already running and most boards have environment committees that tie directly to this week’s programming. Bring questions — they are usually welcome.
Brooklyn’s Earth Week is a reminder that the best environmental action is usually the kind you can walk to. Pick one thing, show up, and the rest takes care of itself.
