If your Memorial Day weekend plans include “move my body somewhere outside,” New York City just made it easy. On Saturday, May 30, at 11:00 a.m., Shape Up NYC Dance Fitness returns to the Hudson River waterfront at West 125th Street — a free, hour-long, drop-in class that fuses dance and aerobics under the open sky. Colorful outfits encouraged. No registration. No fee. Just you, the river, and a city that wants you outside.
What Is Shape Up NYC?
Shape Up NYC is a free group fitness program run by NYC Parks for New Yorkers of all ages. The 2026 season is officially open, with hundreds of free classes scheduled at parks, recreation centers, and waterfront spaces across all five boroughs through October. The lineup runs the full fitness gamut — bodyweight bootcamp, yoga, low-impact cardio, Zumba, tai chi, and dance fitness. There is no formal enrollment. You can sign up online or just walk up and join.
The Riverside Park Saturday class is part of Summer on the Hudson, the Riverside Park Conservancy’s season-long partnership with NYC Parks that programs over 300 free events between 59th and 181st Streets from May through October. Dance fitness, concerts, movies under the stars, pier dance parties, learning workshops — all free, all outdoors.
Saturday’s Class — the Details
What: Shape Up NYC Dance Fitness — a creative workout fusing dance and aerobics.
When: Saturday, May 30, 2026, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Where: West 125th Street & Marginal Streets, in Riverside Park (the Hudson River waterfront in West Harlem).
Cost: Free.
Registration: None required. Just show up.
The class typically runs 60 minutes, suitable for all fitness levels, and skews high-energy. If you have ever wanted to take a Zumba class but felt intimidated by the studio mirror situation, an open-air waterfront class is the friendliest possible entry point. Colorful outfits are encouraged but not required. The instructor leads. You follow as best you can. Nobody is grading you.
How to Get There
West 125th and Marginal Streets sits at the northern edge of Riverside Park’s waterfront stretch, right where the elevated West Side Highway crosses overhead and the Hudson River esplanade opens up.
Subway: Take the 1 train to 125th Street (Broadway). From there, walk west on 125th about eight blocks downhill to the waterfront — roughly a 10-12 minute walk. The route descends past Fairway Market and crosses under the elevated highway. Wear shoes you can walk in.
Bus: The M11 (Amsterdam/Columbus) and the Bx15 both stop near 125th and Broadway. The free M125 select bus also runs along 125th.
Bike: The Hudson River Greenway runs directly past the venue. If you are coming from anywhere on the West Side, the Greenway is the fastest, flattest, prettiest route. Citi Bike stations dot the corridor.
Driving: Limited street parking along Riverside Drive and the side streets above 125th. Most attendees take transit.
What to Bring
- Water. There are public fountains in Riverside Park, but bring your own bottle.
- Sneakers. You will be moving on a paved or grassy surface depending on the exact setup.
- Sunscreen. An 11:00 a.m. start means the sun will already be high.
- A small towel. Optional but appreciated by mid-class.
- An energy bar or post-workout snack. The closest food is a 10-minute walk back up the hill.
Weather Cancellation Policy
Summer on the Hudson events are held outdoors and rain-cancellable. Per the Riverside Park Conservancy, if there is heavy rain at the time of the event, the event will be canceled. For day-of weather updates, check nyc.gov/parks/soh about two hours before class. Seating — or in this case, mat space — is unreserved and first-come, first-served. Arriving 10-15 minutes early is wise.
Pro Tips
- Pair it with brunch. The walk back up 125th puts you within reach of several West Harlem breakfast spots. You earned it.
- Bring a friend. Drop-in fitness is twice as fun with a buddy, and there is no awkwardness about commitment because there is no commitment.
- Stack it with the Greenway. Cycle in along the Hudson River Greenway from the Upper West Side or Midtown, do the class, then cycle back. You will have logged a full morning of outdoor movement.
- Treat the first class as recon. Even if you only watch for 20 minutes the first time, you will know the vibe, the instructor’s style, and the spot — and you will come back next Saturday ready to move.
Why This Class Matters
New York City’s gym economy is brutal. Boutique studio classes routinely run $35 to $45 a session. Even a basic gym membership in Manhattan is rarely under $80 a month. Shape Up NYC quietly inverts that math — trained instructors, real programming, beautiful settings, and zero cost — and it does it in some of the most scenic outdoor spots in the city.
The Hudson River waterfront in late May is one of those settings. The crabapples are still in bloom in Riverside Park’s upper terraces, the river breeze takes the edge off the late-morning sun, and you are working out with a view that tourists pay for. The city is your gym this weekend. Show up.
