Mother’s Day weekend is here, and Manhattan is pulling out all the stops — from the most celebrated gospel concert in the country to a sprawling Japanese street food festival in Chelsea. Whether you’re bringing Mom uptown or exploring the city on your own, this Saturday and Sunday offer some genuinely special options.
McDonald’s Gospelfest at Palladium Times Square
For more than four decades, McDonald’s Gospelfest has been one of the most beloved events in New York City — and the 2026 edition, running Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10 at Palladium Times Square (254 W 54th St), may be its most celebrated yet.
This year’s lineup features some of the biggest names in gospel: Donnie McClurkin, Jennifer Holliday, Le’Andria Johnson, Israel Houghton, Hezekiah Walker, Donald Lawrence, and Smokie Norful. Produced and directed by A. Curtis Farrow — a three-time Emmy Award winner — the event marks the 28th consecutive year Farrow has helmed this production.
Founded in 1983 under the McDonald’s Corporation and the New York Metro Owner/Operator Association, Gospelfest has grown into the nation’s preeminent gospel celebration. For thousands of New Yorkers, it’s an annual tradition that signals the start of warm-weather season. There are two performances across the weekend. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster and Live Nation.
Palladium Times Square is centrally located and easily accessible via multiple subway lines. If you’re coming with family for Mother’s Day, the midtown location makes it easy to pair with dinner before or after the show.
Japan Fes New York in Chelsea
On Saturday, May 9 from 10 AM to 6 PM, the Japan Fes returns to Chelsea at 6th Avenue between 23rd and 24th Street — one of at least 34 Japan Fes events scheduled across New York City in 2026.
This free outdoor festival is one of the best Japanese street food events in the city. Expect a wide range of vendors serving taiyaki filled with red bean, matcha, and taro; A5 Miyazaki wagyu skewers; ramen; yakisoba; matcha lattes; and soufflé-style pancakes. There’s no admission fee, and the festival draws a mix of Japanese expats, tourists, and neighborhood regulars.
Chelsea’s 6th Avenue location is easy to reach from the A/C/E at 23rd Street or the F/M at 23rd Street and 6th Avenue. It’s a pleasant way to spend a Saturday morning — arrive early if you want shorter vendor lines before the lunchtime crowds arrive.
Mother’s Day in Manhattan
Sunday, May 10 is Mother’s Day, and restaurants across Manhattan are already booked solid for brunch. If you haven’t made a reservation, your best bets for walk-ins are neighborhood diners and spots in less trafficked areas like Washington Heights, Inwood, and the East Village, which tend to have more availability than Midtown or the Upper West Side.
For outdoor options, Central Park’s less-visited northern end — around the Conservatory Garden at 105th Street — is typically quieter than the Sheep Meadow area and can be a genuinely beautiful spot for a Mother’s Day afternoon stroll. Admission to the garden is free.
Getting Around This Weekend
If you’re navigating the subway this weekend, be aware that weekend service changes are in effect as of May 8, including disruptions on the G train. Plan extra time if you’re traveling between boroughs. The Japan Fes location in Chelsea and the Gospelfest venue in Midtown are both well-served by multiple lines.
Also worth noting: NYC Ferry has a refreshed weekend schedule with summer timetable changes rolling in — if you’re taking the ferry from another borough to reach Manhattan, check the updated schedule before you go.
