Missed the NYC Kindergarten Deadline? Here Is Exactly What Parents Should Do Right Now for Fall 2026
NYC’s kindergarten application window closed January 23, 2026, and offers went out March 31. If you missed it — or you are not happy with your offer — you still have options. Here is the complete playbook for late applicants.

Who this helps: Parents of children born in 2021 who missed the NYC public school kindergarten application window, are new to the city, or want to change schools after receiving an offer.

Here is the reassuring part first, before anything else: every five-year-old New York City resident is guaranteed a seat in a public school kindergarten program beginning in September the calendar year they turn five (NYC Public Schools — Kindergarten). That means if your child was born in 2021 and lives in NYC, the Department of Education is legally required to provide a seat for the 2026–2027 school year. You cannot miss the deadline so badly that your child has nowhere to go.

What you can miss is your preferred school. Here is how to recover.

Key Dates for the 2026–2027 Kindergarten Cycle

  • Application opened: Tuesday, December 9, 2025
  • Application closed: Friday, January 23, 2026
  • Offers released: Tuesday, March 31, 2026

If today is after the application deadline or after the March 31 offer release, you are officially a late applicant. That is okay. There is a process.

Step 1: Apply Now — Even Late

The Department of Education still accepts late applications. If you miss the application deadline, you can contact your zoned school or other schools of interest to explore your options, and late applicants can be placed on school waitlists (NYC Public Schools).

Here is the fastest route:

  • Go to MySchools.nyc and log in or create an account.
  • Submit your application even though the deadline has passed.
  • Add your child to the waitlists for any schools of interest.

Waitlists can also be joined by contacting the school of interest directly or by contacting the Department of Education.

Step 2: Contact Your Family Welcome Center

Family Welcome Centers are the DOE’s in-person offices where staff can walk you through enrollment, help with a late application, and register your child. There is a center in every borough. Find yours at schools.nyc.gov/enrollment.

Call ahead — appointments are strongly recommended. Bring proof of your child’s date of birth, proof of NYC address (utility bill, lease, or shelter letter), and your child’s immunization records.

Step 3: If You Do Not Receive an Offer

If you do not receive an offer after submitting a late application, the DOE has three direct points of contact:

  • Email: ESenrollment@schools.nyc.gov
  • Phone: 718-935-2009
  • Advocates for Children’s Jill Chaifetz Helpline: 866-427-6033 — free advocacy support for NYC families navigating school enrollment, especially for students with disabilities, students in temporary housing, and multilingual learners

Step 4: Use the Waitlist Strategically

Waitlist positions are fluid and can change as families decline offers or accept other options. A waitlist number in April often improves significantly by July and August. Keep checking MySchools, keep responding promptly when a school reaches out, and keep your zoned school offer as the safety net.

Important: Accepting a seat at one school does not remove you from other waitlists. You can stay on a waitlist for your preferred school while your child has a guaranteed seat elsewhere.

Special Situations

You just moved to NYC: You can enroll any time during the school year. Go directly to your Family Welcome Center with proof of residency.

Your child has an IEP or 504 plan: Contact your Family Welcome Center and ask to speak with the special education liaison. Advocates for Children (866-427-6033) is also a free resource.

You live in a shelter or are in temporary housing: Under the McKinney-Vento Act, your child has immediate enrollment rights. Contact your shelter’s education liaison or call 718-935-2009.

How to Take Action Today

  1. Log into MySchools.nyc and submit a late kindergarten application.
  2. Email ESenrollment@schools.nyc.gov or call 718-935-2009.
  3. Book an appointment with the Family Welcome Center nearest you.
