Spring has officially landed in New York City, and this weekend the streets are alive with the energy that makes this place unlike anywhere else on earth. Whether you spent Sunday strolling among outrageous Easter bonnets on Fifth Avenue or you’re already eyeing next week’s packed calendar of street fairs and block parties, April is serving up festival season on a silver platter. Let’s do the full rundown — from what happened today to what you absolutely cannot miss in the week ahead.
TODAY’S DON’T MISS: The Easter Parade & Bonnet Festival — Fifth Avenue
If you haven’t already made your way uptown, you still have time — the NYC Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival runs until approximately 4 PM today along Fifth Avenue between 49th and 57th Streets, with the epicenter right in front of St. Patrick’s Cathedral. And honestly? This is one of those only-in-New-York spectacles that never gets old.
Unlike most parades, there are no floats, no marching bands, no official start or finish line. This is pure participatory New York: thousands of people just show up and stroll, wearing increasingly elaborate, gravity-defying, outrageously decorated bonnets. We’re talking towering hats with entire dioramas built on top, fascinators made of Easter eggs, floral sculptures so massive you wonder how the wearer’s neck survives the afternoon. It’s equal parts fashion show, neighborhood block party, and community art project — and it’s completely free.
The tradition stretches back to the 1870s, when well-heeled New Yorkers would promenade up Fifth Avenue after Easter services. Over the decades it morphed into something far more theatrical and fun. Today anyone can join — just show up, wear your finest spring look (or something completely absurd), and walk. That’s it. The city takes care of the rest.
Where: Fifth Avenue between 49th and 57th Streets, Manhattan
When: Today, Sunday April 5, 10 AM–4 PM

Looking Ahead: Next Week’s Can’t-Miss Festivals & Block Parties
The parade season is just getting started. Here’s your preview of what’s coming up in the next seven days, and trust me, you’re going to want to clear your calendar.
NYC Tartan Day Parade — Saturday, April 11
The 28th annual NYC Tartan Day Parade takes over Sixth Avenue on Saturday, April 11 and it is an absolute spectacle. Over 3,000 bagpipers, Highland dancers, clan organizations, Scottish dog breeds (yes, they march too), and swirling kilts fill ten blocks from West 45th Street to West 55th Street. Grand Marshal this year is Sam Heughan — yes, the Outlander star himself — and you can expect the crowds to be enormous.
Line-up begins at 1:00 PM on the side streets near 6th Avenue and West 45th Street, with the parade stepping off at 2:00 PM sharp. This is one of the most spirited parades in the spring calendar — the sound of thousands of bagpipers building to a roar as they march up the avenue is genuinely goosebump-inducing. And like all the best New York celebrations, it’s completely free to watch or march.
Where: 6th Avenue, West 45th to West 55th Streets, Manhattan
When: Saturday, April 11, parade starts 2 PM (line-up from 1 PM)

Upper West Side Street Fair — Saturday, April 11
Manhattan’s street fair season kicks into gear this April with one of the earliest and most beloved — the annual Upper West Side street fair along Broadway between 96th and 106th Streets in the Manhattan Valley neighborhood. Sponsored by the 24th Precinct Community Council, this fair draws over 375 vendors stretching across ten blocks of one of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods.
Expect the full street fair experience: food vendors hawking everything from elote to kettle corn, clothing, jewelry, handcrafted goods, vintage finds, and the particular energy of a neighborhood that has come outside to celebrate spring together. Hours run 10 AM to 6 PM, rain or shine, and it’s free to attend.
Where: Broadway between 96th and 106th Streets, Manhattan
When: Saturday, April 11, 10 AM–6 PM

Court Street Street Fair — Brooklyn, April 12
Brooklyn gets in on the action the very next day with the Court Street Street Fair in Carroll Gardens. Running along Court Street between Union and 9th Streets, this neighborhood fair is the kind of low-key, community-centered celebration that reminds you why Brooklyn neighborhoods are so special. Come for the local vendors, the homemade food, and the chance to watch Carroll Gardens completely transform into an outdoor living room for the day.

⭐ Don’t Miss This: MoMA PS1 50th Anniversary Block Party — April 18
Mark this one in ink right now. On Saturday, April 18, MoMA PS1 celebrates its 50th anniversary with a massive, all-day free block party that takes over the museum’s courtyard, public plaza, and galleries from 10 AM to 6 PM. This isn’t a regular block party — this is a cultural institution throwing itself a birthday bash and inviting the entire city.
The lineup is stacked: dance demonstrations by the Queensboro Dance Festival, a FAD makers’ market, a quilting circle with Queensbridge Photo Collective, a self-defense workshop with Malikah, local food vendors including the Queens Night Market, music sets, curator-led gallery talks, and — this is the highlight — a live mural workshop with legendary graffiti artist Lady Pink, one of the defining figures of New York’s street art history. Lady Pink will lead workshops at 10:30 AM, 12:30 PM, and 2:30 PM (separate RSVP required).
The block party coincides with the opening weekend of Greater New York, MoMA PS1’s flagship group exhibition launching the museum’s next chapter. Free with RSVP — and this one will fill up, so register now.

The Big Picture: Manhattan Street Fair Season Is Here
April officially marks the start of Manhattan’s street fair season, and the next six months will bring an almost weekly rotation of neighborhood fairs across the borough. Coming up in mid-April: a massive 10-block fair along 6th Avenue between 23rd Street and Herald Square with over 360 vendors, and a multi-block fair along 2nd Avenue between 4th and 14th Streets in the East Village with nearly 300 vendors. The Upper East Side gets its turn in late April with a fair along Lexington Avenue between 79th and 86th Streets.
All of these fairs are free to attend and run rain or shine. Keep an eye on the NYC street fair calendar as new fairs are added throughout the season.
Pro Tips for Festival Season
Go early. The best street fairs are always more manageable in the morning before the crowds peak around noon. Bring cash — many vendors are cash-only. And if you’re making the trip to the Upper West Side or Carroll Gardens fairs, build in time to explore the neighborhood itself. Half the fun of NYC street fairs is discovering the blocks surrounding them.
Spring has arrived, the streets are opening up, and New York City is doing what it does best: celebrating itself. Get out there.
