Budget Gym Options in NYC
New York City has numerous affordable gym chains that offer full equipment access for $25–50 per month. Planet Fitness has multiple locations throughout all five boroughs and consistently offers the lowest price points ($10–25/month). YMCA branches throughout the city offer pools, group fitness classes, and full gym facilities at a sliding scale based on income. Blink Fitness is a NYC-founded chain with locations throughout the boroughs at competitive monthly rates and above-average equipment maintenance.
For day passes or short-term access, Crunch Fitness, LA Fitness, and the larger Equinox locations (premium pricing, exceptional facilities) all offer guest passes. Equinox day passes run $50–60 but include access to their pools, steam rooms, and class schedule.
Boutique Fitness Studios
NYC is home to the country’s densest concentration of boutique fitness studios. Many of the major boutique concepts were invented here.
SoulCycle (indoor cycling with a cult following) has numerous Manhattan and Brooklyn locations. Single classes run $34–40. Barry’s Bootcamp (treadmill and weight room intervals) has multiple NYC locations and is widely considered one of the best cardio-based class workouts available — intense, and priced accordingly. Rumble Boxing is NYC-founded and offers boxing-inspired workouts in a well-designed studio environment.
For yoga, NYC has exceptional options across styles: Pure Yoga (premium, multiple Midtown and UES locations), Y7 Studio (heated, music-driven vinyasa), and dozens of independent studios in neighborhood-specific settings. ClassPass aggregates class booking across most boutique studios and is often the most cost-effective way to try multiple studios.
Free Outdoor Fitness in NYC
NYC Parks operates free outdoor fitness equipment throughout the five boroughs — over 1,000 pieces of equipment in parks across the city. The Muscle Beach equivalent is under the Manhattan Bridge in DUMBO (a public outdoor gym that is actually used seriously). The Great Lawn in Central Park hosts free outdoor yoga classes in summer. Prospect Park has both an outdoor fitness area and a network of trails ideal for running.
The NYC Parks SummerStage and NYC Parks Fitness programs offer free outdoor fitness classes in parks throughout all five boroughs from spring through fall. Check the NYC Parks website for schedules — classes range from yoga to Latin dance to boot camp.
Running in NYC
New York City has a devoted running community and excellent routes at every level. Central Park (6.1-mile loop road, closed to cars on weekends) is the classic. The Hudson River Greenway runs the full length of Manhattan’s west side — over 11 miles — completely car-free. The Brooklyn Bridge Park waterfront path connects multiple piers with great views. Prospect Park‘s 3.3-mile loop is one of the best running routes in any urban park anywhere.
The New York Road Runners organization hosts numerous free and low-cost races throughout the year, from 5Ks to the NYC Half Marathon. Members get access to regular free group runs in Central Park most mornings.
NYC’s Best Indoor Pools
Swimming in NYC is possible year-round at public and private facilities. NYC Parks outdoor pools (free in summer) are scattered across the boroughs. For indoor swimming year-round, the YMCA pools are the best value. Most major universities allow community membership access to their pools. Asphalt Green on the Upper East Side has an Olympic-size pool and a full fitness facility — one of the best aquatics facilities in the city.
