Now Open

After Eden — Lower East Side

162 Orchard St, Manhattan | Vietnamese Cafe by Day, Southeast Asian Cocktail Bar by Night

After Eden is pulling double duty on the Lower East Side — a sleek Vietnamese coffee shop during the day that transforms into a Southeast Asian-inspired cocktail lounge come evening. Whether you need a ca phe sua da to power through your afternoon or a lemongrass-forward cocktail to wind down, this one is worth the trip to Orchard Street.

Ms. Alice — Lower East Side

79 Rivington St, Manhattan | Cocktail Bar

A European aperitivo-inspired cocktail bar that is already generating buzz for its Yuzu Negroni and Pickled Blueberry Martini. If you are looking for a refined but relaxed place to start your evening on the LES, Ms. Alice should be on your list.

Opening This Week

Prince St. Pizza — Carroll Gardens

271 Smith St, Brooklyn | NYC Pizza Icon | Opens April 23

This is a big deal. Prince St. Pizza has not opened a new NYC location since its original Nolita shop debuted in 2012 — and now it is finally crossing the bridge to Brooklyn. The Carroll Gardens outpost at 271 Smith Street opens at noon on April 23. The first 25 guests score a $25 credit. Prince St. is also partnering with Italian sportswear brand Sergio Tacchini for the opening, complete with co-branded pizza boxes and a limited Sergio Tacchini Perfection slice. Doors open noon to midnight on day one.

Skinny Louie — Upper East Side

1565 2nd Ave (between 81st and 82nd Sts), Manhattan | Smash Burgers | Opens April 24

The Florida-born smash burger chain keeps expanding in NYC, and the Upper East Side is next. Skinny Louie is all about Black Angus beef smash burgers, crispy fries, and thick shakes. This will be the brand’s third NYC location, joining Noho and the West Village.

Al Volo — Pier 57, Chelsea

Market 57, 25 11th Ave, Manhattan | Contemporary Italian | Opens April 24

Pier 57 adds another dining draw with Al Volo, a contemporary Italian gastronomy concept featuring panini, pizza al taglio, focacce, and spritzes. The waterfront location means sunset views with your aperitivo — hard to beat as warmer weather arrives.

Closings to Know About

Chap-A-Nosh — Midwood, Brooklyn

After more than 40 years serving the Midwood community, this kosher Chinese-American institution permanently closed on April 7. Owner Elie Pollak announced the closure, ending an era for one of Brooklyn’s most beloved neighborhood restaurants. If you grew up eating there, you are not alone in feeling this one.

Tempura NYC — Hell’s Kitchen

The kosher rooftop sushi spot at the Cassa Hotel lost its lease and closed permanently this week — no advance notice, no farewell dinner. After six years in Hell’s Kitchen, Tempura NYC is gone. A tough break for a spot that had carved out a loyal following.

Still Coming This Spring

A few more openings to keep on your radar: Ugly Baby relocates its fiery Thai cooking from Carroll Gardens to 364 Grand St in Williamsburg. Jeju Noodle Bar opens a Nolita sequel at 204 Elizabeth St with new dishes beyond its West Village original. And Pizza Studio Tamaki, the Tokyo-based restaurant that helped make Japan a pizza destination, takes over a space on St. Marks Place in the East Village.
