Brooklyn
Café Bar J.F. — 50 Withers Street, Williamsburg. The biggest opening of the week is a homecoming. Restaurateur Juan Correa, the man behind Llama Inn — the spot that shaped modern Peruvian dining in New York for nearly a decade — has reopened that same Williamsburg corner as Café Bar J.F., a South American–leaning tavern. Chef Francisco Castillo (formerly of sister restaurant Llama San) is running a nostalgia-driven kitchen that pulls from Peru, Chile, and Argentina, with a wine list curated by Pierre Buffet and cocktails by Sarah Morrissey. It’s a 55-seat room designed by Madrid’s Plantea Estudio, built to function as a neighborhood third space rather than a destination splurge. If you mourned Llama Inn, this is your sign to go back.
Lonnies — 112 Bond Street, Boerum Hill. Still drawing crowds since opening earlier this month, this cozy, Art Deco–leaning spot comes from the married duo behind Inga’s Bar, Sean Rembold and Caron Callahan. The short, comforting menu leans on chicken under a brick, a daily prime rib special, burgers, and Basque cheesecake. It’s the kind of low-key neighborhood restaurant that fills up fast on weekends — go early or go late.
Bar Susanne — 6 River Street, Domino Park. Open since mid-month and worth flagging if you haven’t been: a seafood-forward bar right on the East River. The menu runs to scallop crudo, crab salad, fluke Milanese, and grilled squid, plus caviar service and a playful oyster shooter that arrives as mango sorbet with coconut crème anglaise. The river views do a lot of the work, but the kitchen holds up its end.
Manhattan
Queens Tavern — 20 Hudson Yards. From the British group behind Queensyard comes a more casual follow-up: pints of Guinness, Scotch eggs, Welsh rarebit, and the kind of pub comfort that’s genuinely scarce inside a luxury mall. It’s a useful one to know if you’re shopping or catching something nearby and want a real meal instead of a food court.
Oyatte — 125 East 39th Street, Murray Hill. On the splurgier end, chef Hasung Lee’s first fine-dining venture is an eight-course tasting menu built almost entirely around produce from a single upstate farm, Crown Daisy Farm. A reservation-only, occasion kind of place if you’re looking to mark something.
The Takeaway
This week belongs to Williamsburg — Café Bar J.F. reopening the old Llama Inn space is the story locals will be talking about. For waterfront drinks and small plates, Bar Susanne; for a neighborhood dinner, Lonnies. We’ll be back with the next roundup as more doors open. Spotted something we missed in your neighborhood? That’s exactly the kind of tip that makes this column better.
