Quick Bites
- Brookiez (West Village) — A new bakery built around the brownie-cookie hybrid is now open at 77 Christopher Street, with brookie flavors like cheesecake, blondie, and Oreo, plus lattes and gelato.
- Chama Mama (Bushwick) — The Manhattan Georgian favorite has officially settled into 81 Morgan Avenue with a 64-seat dining room and Let’s Chama, a dedicated Georgian bakery counter.
- Sea & Soil (Boerum Hill) — The worker-owned co-op has reopened in a much larger Atlantic Avenue space at 388 Atlantic, between Hoyt and Bond.
- Cinco de Mayo, today — Avant Garden in the East Village is doing a one-night Puebla-focused menu, and Tortilleria Nixtamal in Corona is a perennial Roosevelt Avenue stop for the holiday.
Manhattan
Now open — Brookiez (77 Christopher Street, West Village). If you were a fan of the bakery boom that ate the West Village over the past two years, here is your next stop. The whole shop is built around the brookie — that brownie-meets-cookie hybrid that lives somewhere between a fudge bar and a soft-baked chocolate chip. Cheesecake, blondie, and Oreo are the headliners. They are also pulling lattes and scooping gelato, which makes Brookiez a real after-dinner option, not just a midday sugar stop. Christopher Street between Bleecker and Bedford is already a foot-traffic magnet on weekends — expect a line.
Cinco de Mayo, Manhattan edition. The most ambitious one-night menu in the borough belongs to Avant Garden in the East Village, which is running a full pivot to the cuisine of Puebla on May 5. If you were hoping for the usual margarita-and-taco circuit, both The Infatuation and Resy are maintaining running lists of pop-ups and specials worth checking before you commit to a Tuesday plan.
Brooklyn
Now open — Chama Mama, Bushwick (81 Morgan Avenue). The Manhattan Georgian darling has crossed the river into a 6,300-square-foot Bushwick space with three connected experiences under one roof: a 64-seat main dining room with an open kitchen, a bar and lounge, and Let’s Chama, a dedicated Georgian bakery. Let’s Chama is the move during the day — khachapuri, mushroom pies, chocolate cigaretti, and house lattes including a fig-vanilla and a cinnamon-walnut. The bakery is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The full restaurant takes over at night.
Reopened bigger — Sea & Soil (388 Atlantic Avenue, Boerum Hill). The worker-owned sandwich co-op that built a quiet following in Red Hook and Cobble Hill has now reopened in a roomier Atlantic Avenue address between Hoyt Street and Bond Street. The sandwich menu is the same heart of the operation, with the Sunday pizza tradition continuing. If you missed them at the old spot, this is the easiest version of Sea & Soil to walk into.
Worth knowing — Bar Chimera (Williamsburg) opened in mid-April and has been packed every weekend since; Sunday and Monday nights remain the easiest entry points.
Queens
Cinco de Mayo on Roosevelt Avenue. No major confirmed openings or closings in the borough in the last 48 hours, but if you are pointed toward Corona today, Tortilleria Nixtamal at 104-05 47th Avenue is the platonic ideal of a Cinco de Mayo lunch in Queens — fresh masa tortillas, no frills, and one of the few places in the city that mills its own corn. Worth the trip.
The Bronx & Staten Island
Quiet on the openings boards. The bigger story across the outer boroughs right now is the rolling start of the 2026 outdoor dining season — roughly 1,800 sidewalk and roadway setups citywide are eligible to operate, but program rules continue to evolve. If you are planning to sit outside for Cinco de Mayo, call ahead to confirm your spot has its setup approved.
The Bottom Line
Today is Cinco de Mayo, and the food story of the day is on Roosevelt Avenue and the East Village more than in any single new opening. Outside of the holiday, Brookiez is the West Village curiosity worth your time, Chama Mama Bushwick is the bigger ambition project, and Sea & Soil’s bigger Boerum Hill home is a quiet win for one of Brooklyn’s more interesting co-op operations.
