Memorial Day weekend service changes go into effect at 11:30 p.m. Friday, May 29, and most major work runs through 5 a.m. Tuesday, June 2. Five lines see significant disruptions, and one (the Z) is suspended entirely. Here is the quick-scan guide for riders heading into the long weekend.

What Lines Are Affected This Weekend

4 and 5 trains: Lexington Avenue Line track replacement

From 11:30 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Tuesday:

  • 4 trains are not running between Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall and Crown Hts-Utica Av or New Lots Av. Service continues between Woodlawn and Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall, running local in Manhattan.
  • 5 trains are not running between Grand Central-42 St and Bowling Green. During day and evening hours, 5 trains run between Eastchester-Dyre Av and Grand Central-42 St every 12 minutes.

Alternatives: For Manhattan service between Grand Central and Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall, take the 6. For Fulton St, Wall St, and Bowling Green, use nearby 2/3 or A/J stations. 7 train: Flushing Line station work

From 11:30 p.m. Friday to 10:30 a.m. Monday, 7 trains are not running between 74 St-Broadway and 34 St-Hudson Yards because of station renewal work.

  • Free shuttle buses run along three routes: T320 between 74 St-Broadway and Queensboro Plaza (local stops), T323 between Queensboro Plaza and Vernon Blvd-Jackson Av (local stops), and T260 overnight in Manhattan between Times Sq-42 St and 34 St-Hudson Yards.
  • The LIRR is accommodating subway riders between Queens and Manhattan at no additional cost at Flushing, Mets-Willets Point, Woodside, Grand Central Madison, and Penn Station.
  • Exiting at Queensboro Plaza or Court Sq? Get a GO Ticket from a station agent to re-enter.
  • The 42 St Shuttle (S) runs all weekend, including overnight.

Heads up: Monday morning, May 31 — er, June 1 — additional 7 train stop changes in Queens begin and continue through 2027.

J train: Structural work, Brooklyn-Manhattan-Queens

From 11:30 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Tuesday, J trains are not running between Broadway Junction and Marcy Av. Service runs in two sections: between Jamaica Center-Parsons/Archer and Broadway Junction, and between Marcy Av and Broad St.

Free B93 shuttle buses make all G stops between Bedford-Nostrand Avs and Hoyt-Schermerhorn Sts, connecting to the A/C at Jay St-MetroTech. For service between Bergen St and Church Av, take the F. The work is part of the CBTC signal modernization project on the Crosstown Line.

Memorial Day Monday (June 1)

The subway and buses run on a Sunday schedule for Memorial Day. Some weekend changes (the 4, 5, J, and Z work) continue through Tuesday morning.

Commuter Tip

If you’re heading to a Memorial Day BBQ in Brooklyn or out to the Rockaways, pull up the MTA’s Memorial Day weekend service map before you leave. Two of the city’s east-side workhorses (the 4 and 5) are running on a heavily modified pattern, and the 7 to Hudson Yards is replaced by shuttle buses — so a 20-minute ride could become 45 if you guess wrong. Also: the extended summer Rockaway Park Shuttle to Rockaway Blvd starts this weekend.

Service changes are subject to change. Check the MTA homepage or the MTA app before heading out for real-time updates. All service details verified via the official MTA Weekender: Memorial Day Weekend 2026 bulletin, updated May 22, 2026.
