If you’re riding the subway this Memorial Day weekend, plan ahead. The MTA’s holiday weekender carries a stack of major changes that run straight through Monday and into Tuesday morning — so the disruptions you hit on Saturday are the same ones waiting for you on Sunday and the holiday itself. Here’s the no-nonsense rundown by line, plus how to get around the gaps.
Holiday Schedule Reminder
Because Monday, May 25 is Memorial Day, subways and buses run on a Sunday schedule that day. Build in extra time — trains come less often than on a normal weekday.
What Lines Are Affected
Quick scan before you head out the door:
- 4 and 5 trains — major reroutes in Manhattan and Brooklyn
- 7 train — suspended between Queens and Manhattan
- J and M trains — running in sections; Z not running at all
- 1, 2, 6, B, D, N — skipped stops and express reroutes
4 and 5 Trains: Brooklyn and Manhattan
From 11:30 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Tuesday, track replacement work reshapes the East Side. 4 trains aren’t running between Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall and Crown Hts-Utica Av or New Lots Av — instead they run between Woodlawn and Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall, and local in Manhattan. 5 trains aren’t running between Grand Central-42 St and Bowling Green. During the day and evening, 5 trains run between Eastchester-Dyre Av and Grand Central-42 St every 12 minutes, while 6 trains come every 8 minutes.
To get around it: take the 6 between Grand Central-42 St and Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall; use nearby 2 or 3 stations for Fulton St, Wall St, and Bowling Green; and ride the 2, 3, A, or C for direct Manhattan-to-Brooklyn service. For Crown Hts-Utica Av to New Lots Av, the 3 is running to and from New Lots Av.
7 Train: Manhattan and Queens
From 11:30 p.m. Friday to 10:30 a.m. Monday, 7 trains aren’t running between 74 St-Broadway and 34 St-Hudson Yards because of station work along the Flushing Line. Free shuttle buses cover the gap on three routes: T320 between 74 St-Broadway and Queensboro Plaza, T323 between Queensboro Plaza and Vernon Blvd-Jackson Av, and the overnight T260 in Manhattan between Times Sq-42 St and 34 St-Hudson Yards. The E, F, M, and R also link Queens and Manhattan, and the LIRR is accepting subway riders at no extra cost at Flushing, Mets-Willets Point, Woodside, Grand Central Madison, and Penn Station. Note: starting Monday morning, longer-term 7 train stop changes in Queens begin and continue through 2027.
J, M, and Z Trains: Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens
From 11:30 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Tuesday, structural work splits the J. J trains aren’t running between Broadway Junction and Marcy Av, instead running in two sections — Jamaica Center-Parsons/Archer to Broadway Junction, and Marcy Av to Broad St. M trains aren’t running, and Z trains aren’t running at all. Free B107 shuttle buses make all M stops between Middle Village-Metropolitan Av and Marcy Av; free T433 shuttle buses make all J stops between Broadway Junction and Marcy Av. Take the J between Marcy Av and Delancey St-Essex St.
Other Stops Being Skipped
Several lines skip stops in one direction Friday night through early Tuesday: South Ferry-bound 1 trains run nonstop 145 St to 96 St; Manhattan-bound 6 trains run express Parkchester to 3 Av-138 St; Norwood-bound B trains skip 155 St; and Manhattan-bound N trains run nonstop Kings Hwy to 18 Av. For a skipped stop, ride the opposite direction and double back.
All changes are subject to last-minute updates, so confirm on the MTA homepage or the Planned Service Changes lookup tool before you travel. Source: MTA Weekender: Memorial Day Weekend 2026.
