NYC Subway Service Alerts: Saturday, May 23, 2026 — 7 Train Out Between Queens and Manhattan All Weekend, J/Z Suspended, 4/5 Cut Back to Grand Central Through Memorial Day
Heading out this Memorial Day weekend? Five major subway lines have planned service changes through Tuesday morning. Here is exactly what is running, what is not, and how to get around.

Welcome to the unofficial first weekend of summer in New York City. The MTA has stacked a lot of track, switch and structural work into Memorial Day weekend, so before you head to Coney Island, Rockaway, the Hamptons or just brunch, here is the quick-scan rundown of what is running and what is not from Friday night through Tuesday morning. All changes below are confirmed from the official MTA Weekender for Memorial Day Weekend 2026.

What Lines Are Affected

  • 7 train — No service between 74 St-Broadway and 34 St-Hudson Yards
  • J train — No service between Broadway Junction and Marcy Av; running in two sections
  • Z train — Not running at all this weekend
  • 4 train — No service between Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall and Crown Hts-Utica Av or New Lots Av
  • 5 train — No service between Grand Central-42 St and Bowling Green
  • Memorial Day, Monday May 25 — Subways operate on a Sunday schedule

7 Train: Queens to Manhattan Severed

From 11:30 p.m. Friday, May 22 through 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 25, 7 trains are not running between 74 St-Broadway in Queens and 34 St-Hudson Yards in Manhattan. Flushing-bound 7 trains are running express from 74 St-Broadway to Mets-Willets Point, and at Junction Blvd all trains are stopping at the Manhattan-bound platform. The work is for accessibility upgrades, track replacement and switch maintenance.

Three free shuttle bus routes are filling the gap: T320 between 74 St-Broadway and Queensboro Plaza, T323 between Queensboro Plaza and Vernon Blvd-Jackson Av, and the overnight T260 between Times Sq-42 St and 34 St-Hudson Yards. The 42 St Shuttle (S) is running all weekend, including overnight, which is unusual. Better option for many riders: the LIRR is accommodating subway customers at no additional cost between Flushing, Mets-Willets Point, Woodside, Grand Central Madison and Penn Station. If you are exiting at Queensboro Plaza or Court Sq, grab a GO Ticket from a station agent to re-enter.

J and Z Trains: Suspended Across the East River

From 11:30 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Tuesday, the J train is not running between Broadway Junction and Marcy Av, and the Z is not running at all. The J is operating in two sections: Jamaica Center-Parsons/Archer to Broadway Junction, and Marcy Av to Broad St. Free B107 shuttle buses are covering Middle Village-Metropolitan Av to Marcy Av, and free T433 shuttle buses are running between Broadway Junction and Marcy Av, making all J stops.

The work is for elevator ADA accessibility upgrades at Myrtle Ave plus track replacement and structure painting. For Marcy Av to Delancey St-Essex St, take the M train.

4 and 5 Trains: Lexington Avenue Local Pattern

From 11:30 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Tuesday, 4 trains are not running between Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall and Crown Hts-Utica Av or New Lots Av, and 5 trains are not running between Grand Central-42 St and Bowling Green. The 4 is running between Woodlawn and Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall and running local in Manhattan. The 5 is running between Eastchester-Dyre Av and Grand Central-42 St every 12 minutes during days and evenings. The cause is track switch replacement.

For Brooklyn service, take the 2 or 3. For Fulton St, Wall St, and Bowling Green, use nearby J, R, or W stations. The 3 train is running to New Lots Av all weekend, so use it for Crown Hts-Utica Av to New Lots Av.

Holiday Schedule

On Memorial Day itself, Monday, May 26, subways, buses, LIRR and Metro-North all operate on a Sunday schedule. Routes that do not normally run on Sundays will not operate on Memorial Day.

Bonus: Summer Service Begins

Starting Saturday, May 23, the Rockaway Park Shuttle (S) is extended to Rockaway Blvd through Labor Day weekend, giving you a much better connection to the Rockaways. The Bx12-SBS to Orchard Beach also begins weekend service today, and the Q35 is diverting into Jacob Riis Park through September 7.

Commuter Tip: If you are heading from Queens to Manhattan this weekend, skip the shuttle bus chaos and use your subway swipe on the LIRR for free at Flushing, Mets-Willets Point, Woodside, Grand Central Madison or Penn Station. You will save 30+ minutes on the express trip versus the 7 train shuttle bus relay.
