Who’s affected: Rockaway Peninsula residents heading to/from the city. Plan ahead β shuttle buses add travel time.
Five Boro Bike Tour: Bus Detours on Sunday
The Five Boro Bike Tour rolls through all five boroughs on Sunday, May 3, bringing widespread street closures and bus detours across the city. The MTA has confirmed that numerous bus routes will operate with diversions throughout the day.
The subway remains the most reliable way to get around the city on Sunday. If you’re heading to or from the Bike Tour, MTA is suspending bicycle restrictions on subway trains β simply tap your OMNY card and ask the station agent to open the service gate for your bike.

Weekend Tips
- Check the MTA app before leaving β service alerts update in real time during the weekend.
- Shuttle buses run frequently but add time. Budget an extra 15β20 minutes if your trip involves a shuttle connection.
- Sunday bus riders: expect significant delays near Bike Tour routes. Use subway alternatives where possible.
- Cyclists riding the Five Boro Bike Tour: bikes ride free on NYC Ferry this weekend β check ferry.nyc for pier locations near the route.
Commuter Tip: If you’re heading to the Rockaways this weekend, leave earlier than usual. The Rockaway Park Shuttle suspension, combined with Sunday’s Five Boro Bike Tour bus diversions, means surface travel will be slower across Queens. The A train to Rockaway Blvd remains your best through-route.
