The bottom line: A sunny, breezy Sunday with highs near 79°F across the five boroughs gives way to a backdoor cold front overnight, knocking Monday’s highs into the mid-70s before unseasonable warmth returns Tuesday with widespread 80s — and 90s possible north and west of the city. Wednesday afternoon brings showers and thunderstorms as a cold front sweeps through.

Borough-by-Borough

Manhattan: Full sun, light SW breeze. The mid-park grid will feel warmer than the avenues — close to 80°F by midday. Tonight stays mild at 66-68°F under partly cloudy skies.

Brooklyn: Coney Island and the south shore will run a few degrees cooler than inland neighborhoods because of onshore SW flow off the still-cold (low 50s°F) ocean. Prospect Park and Bed-Stuy: solid 78-80°F afternoon.

Queens: JFK and Far Rockaway will be cooler than Astoria and Forest Hills because of that maritime influence. Rockaway Beach: don’t expect bathing-warm water — the National Weather Service is flagging cold-water safety concerns for kayakers and small-boat users today; water temps remain in the 50s°F and hypothermia onset is fast.

The Bronx: Among the warmest spots in the city. Northern Bronx neighborhoods will brush 80°F. Van Cortlandt and Pelham Bay parks are open.

Staten Island: Tracking nearly identical to NJ — warm and sunny. South Beach and Midland Beach will feel breezier off the Lower Bay than inland Tottenville. Same cold-water warning applies to the harbor.

NYC Operations for Sunday

  • Alternate Side Parking: Not in effect — Sunday. Parking meters also not in effect on Sundays in NYC. (Source: NYC 311 ASP article KA-01011.)
  • DSNY garbage: No Sunday collection (standard schedule). Recycling and refuse run on regular weekday schedules.
  • NYC DOE schools: Closed (Sunday). Schools open normally Monday May 18 — no scheduled holiday until Memorial Day, Monday May 25. (Source: NYC DOE 2025-2026 calendar.)
  • MTA subway: Standard Sunday planned-work pattern in effect; several lines including the 2, 4, and A have weekend service changes for track and signal work. Check new.mta.info before you ride.

What to Decide Today

  • If you bike: Today is excellent. Light SW winds, full sun, and dry pavement through the entire ride window. The strongest gusts (up to 20 kt) come in mid-afternoon — head out morning or evening if you want calmer air.
  • If you’re walking the dog at midday: Sun is strong this time of year; bring water. Surface temperatures in direct sun will be much higher than the 79°F air reading, especially on Manhattan and Brooklyn rooftops and asphalt.
  • If you’re going to the beach: Air is warm, water is not. Rockaway, Coney Island, Orchard Beach, South Beach SI — fine to sit and walk, dangerous to swim or kayak without a wetsuit. NWS specifically warns of rapid hypothermia onset.
  • If you have school-age kids tomorrow: Normal pickup, normal commute. Monday is cooler — pack a light layer, not a heavy jacket.
  • If you commute to Midtown Tuesday: Plan for the first 90°F-feel day of the season. Subway platforms will be 10-15°F hotter than the street. Hydrate before you get on the train.

Tuesday’s Heat: How Serious?

The NWS forecast discussion (issued 5:22 a.m. EDT today by the New York office) calls for highs Tuesday and Wednesday “from generally the 80s at the coast (minus the south shore beaches of LI), to the lower and mid 90s from NYC and points north and west.” Forecasters noted record high minimum temperatures are a better possibility than daytime records — meaning overnight lows in the upper 60s that don’t let the city cool down.

No heat advisory is in effect at publish time. We’ll update if NWS issues one. The Wednesday cold front trended faster overnight, so the worst heat is now expected to peak Tuesday rather than build into Wednesday.
