Forecast period: Wednesday, April 29, 2026 — issued by the National Weather Service, updated 6:19 AM ET
New Yorkers get a pleasant window today before a significant rain event moves in after dark. Wednesday will feel almost spring-like — partly sunny skies, temperatures topping out between 58°F and 62°F depending on your borough, and a light southeast wind. The catch: a potent storm system arrives Wednesday night, bringing 90% precipitation chances, potential thunderstorms, and up to three-quarters of an inch of rain before Thursday morning. If you have flexibility in your Wednesday evening plans, wrap them up before 8 PM.
Borough-by-Borough Forecast
Manhattan: High near 58°F, partly sunny through the afternoon, with temperatures dipping to around 55°F by late afternoon. A slight chance of rain showers develops after 5 PM (20% chance). Once evening hits, conditions deteriorate quickly — rain showers before 11 PM, then showers and thunderstorms overnight. Low around 51°F. Up to 0.75″ of rain possible overnight. SE wind 8–12 mph tonight.
Queens: Slightly warmer than Manhattan, with a high near 62°F and partly sunny skies. Rain holds off longer here — showers arrive after 8 PM (90% chance). Low around 49°F overnight. Rainfall accumulation 0.5–0.75 inches. SE wind 7–12 mph through the night.
Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island: Conditions broadly similar to Queens — dry and mild through the workday, then the rain line sweeps across all five boroughs during the evening hours. Expect wet roads by the time the late commute winds down.
Impact Guide: What You Need to Know
Morning and afternoon commute (6–9 AM, 3–7 PM): Morning commuters are in good shape — no precipitation expected. MTA subway and bus service faces no weather-related disruptions during rush hour. Evening commuters heading home before 7 PM should largely beat the rain. If you’re leaving work after 8 PM, carry an umbrella and give yourself extra travel time — wet platforms and reduced visibility on surface routes are likely.
NYC DOE schools: No school closures or delays anticipated. Wednesday’s daytime conditions are well within normal parameters for outdoor recess. Afternoon and after-school activities outdoors should proceed normally, but plan to wrap up by 5 PM as conditions deteriorate heading into the evening.
Alternate Side Parking: Alternate side parking regulations are in effect today. Move your vehicle as scheduled — no weather suspension is active.
DSNY garbage collection: Wednesday is a regular collection day citywide. Bins should be set out as normal. No service delays are anticipated due to weather.
If you bike: Today is a reasonable bike commute morning — dry roads, mild temps, light wind. Avoid biking home after 7 PM; wet pavement and potential thunderstorms make evening riding risky.
If you drive: Daytime driving is clear. For Wednesday night, leave earlier or later than normal if you can. The storm brings gusty SE winds (8–12 mph) alongside heavy rain — wet brakes, puddles, and reduced visibility are all possible once the system arrives.
Outdoor dining and events: Lunch service on patios will be comfortable. Evening outdoor dining and any open-air events after 7 PM should move inside or plan for rain.
Looking Ahead
Thursday clears out as the storm exits north, but showers linger into early afternoon (50% chance before 2 PM). The pattern dries and brightens Friday and into the weekend, with pleasant May-like conditions: sunny skies, high near 59°F Friday, 55–58°F over the weekend.
