NYC Weekend Weather: Skip the Beach Saturday, Save It for a Sunny 76° Sunday
A tale of two days at NYC parks and beaches: Saturday is raw and choppy with a Small Craft Advisory and Gale Warning, while Sunday delivers calm water, light wind, and 76°F.

The short version: This is a tale of two days at the parks and beaches. Saturday is dry but raw — a gusty north wind and choppy, advisory-level surf make it a poor day for the water and a so-so day for the picnic blanket. Sunday flips the script entirely: light wind, calm water, full sun, and 76°F. If your weekend plan involves Rockaway, Coney Island, Orchard Beach, or a long stretch in the park, Sunday is the day.

Weekend outdoor forecast: NYC parks and beaches, May 30–31

HelpNewYork’s Saturday weekend feature, built from the National Weather Service New York forecast and Coastal Waters Forecast issued early Saturday morning.

Saturday at the beach: breezy, choppy, and cool

City beaches open for the season on Memorial Day weekend, but Saturday is not the day to test the water. The NWS has a Small Craft Advisory in effect for New York Harbor through this evening, and a stronger Gale Warning offshore and across the south-shore bays from 6 a.m. through the evening. Translation for beachgoers:

  • Rockaway and Coney Island: North-to-northwest winds gusting to 30+ mph and an elevated, choppy surf. Air temps only in the low-to-mid 60s, and it feels cooler at the waterline. Fine for a windy boardwalk walk; not a swimming or sunbathing day.
  • Orchard Beach (Bronx): Sheltered Long Island Sound water is calmer than the open ocean, but still breezy and cool. Waves running 2–4 ft on the Sound today.
  • Lifeguards: Even where on duty, expect green-to-yellow conditions to lean cautious with the wind. Always swim only at protected beaches when lifeguards are present.

Saturday in the parks: bring a windbreaker

Central Park, Prospect Park, Flushing Meadows, Van Cortlandt — all dry, all partly sunny, all breezy. With a high near 63°F and gusts to 32 mph, it’ll feel like the mid-50s in open, exposed areas. Good for:

  • A brisk walk, a run, or a dog outing.
  • Field sports — though high pop-flies, frisbees, and kites will be at the wind’s mercy.

Less good for: a long picnic, a baby nap on a blanket, or anything that depends on staying warm and still. Bring a layer and pin down the napkins.

Sunday is the weekend’s prize

Everything that’s wrong with Saturday is right with Sunday. The NWS forecast calls for full sun, a high near 76°F, and a light northwest wind around 7 mph. The Coastal Waters Forecast shows New York Harbor seas dropping to one foot or less as the wind backs off — calm, friendly water.

  • Beaches: Sunday is the swim-and-sunbathe day. Warm air, light wind, gentle surf. Get there early; everyone else will have the same idea.
  • Parks: Near-ideal. Pack the picnic you skipped Saturday.
  • Cyclists and runners: Calm, warm, sunny — one of the best days of the spring to log miles on the greenways.

Quick weekend planner

  • Best beach window: Sunday, late morning into afternoon.
  • Best park window: Sunday, all day. Saturday fine for active outings, not for lounging.
  • Skip: Saturday ocean swimming — advisory-level surf and cold water.
  • Getting there: Heading to Rockaway or Coney via the A or the D/F/N/Q? It’s a dry weekend with no weather impact, but check mta.info/alerts for the weekend G-line shuttle work and any other planned changes before you go.
