NYC’s Free Outdoor Bootcamps Are Back: Where to Sweat in the Parks This May

The city is your gym — and this May, New York’s parks are fully loaded with free outdoor fitness programs that cost nothing but your time and effort. From Brooklyn waterfront boot camps to mid-Manhattan bodyweight circuits, the warm-weather fitness season is officially on.

Here’s your guide to the best free and low-cost outdoor classes running right now across the five boroughs.

Bryant Park Boot Camp (Midtown Manhattan)

One of the most consistent free fitness offerings in the city, Rise NYC runs early-morning boot camps on the Fifth Avenue Terrace at Bryant Park, every week at 7:00–7:30am. The sessions are short, sharp, and genuinely effective — a half-hour of heart rate work before your morning commute. Bring a mat if you have one; the terrace is paved but manageable.

How to get there: Subway to 42nd St–Bryant Park (B/D/F/M) or 5th Ave (7). The park is free and open to all.

Brooklyn Bridge Park Amp’d Bootcamp (Brooklyn Heights)

Every Wednesday from 6:00–7:00pm, Chelsea Piers Fitness leads a free Amp’d Bootcamp session in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Running through the end of September, this is a serious workout with waterfront views of Lower Manhattan — one of the great free fitness experiences in New York.

All levels are welcome. Sessions take place outdoors on the park’s open lawns, with modifications offered so beginners can keep up and regulars can push hard.

How to get there: A/C to High St–Brooklyn Bridge, or the East River Ferry to Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 1. The park entrance is at Furman Street, Brooklyn.

Fort Greene Park Boot Camp (Brooklyn)

Chelsea Piers Fitness coach Declan Julien leads a free high-intensity interval training session at the top of Fort Greene Park — one of Brooklyn’s most beautiful hilltop parks. The session combines bodyweight strength work and cardio circuits with no equipment required. It’s genuinely challenging and totally free.

Address: Fort Greene Park, DeKalb Ave at Washington Park, Brooklyn, NY 11205
How to get there: C train to Lafayette Ave or G to Fulton St. Walk up the main park path to the top of the hill.

Shape Up NYC — Free Classes Borough-Wide

NYC Parks runs the Shape Up NYC program every spring and summer, with hundreds of free fitness classes at parks across all five boroughs. The 2026 season runs from May through October and currently has more than 350 events on the calendar. Classes include yoga, Pilates, dance fitness, Zumba, bootcamp, bodyweight circuit training, Tai Chi, and stretching.

A standby favorite: Dance Fitness at Prospect Park Boathouse runs Saturdays 10–11am — an upbeat, all-levels class that’s become a weekend ritual for Brooklyn regulars. Find the full schedule at nycgovparks.org/events/shape-up-nyc.

How to get there (Prospect Park): B/Q to Prospect Park station. The Boathouse is at the park’s center near the lake.

Domino Park Fitness Series (Williamsburg, Brooklyn)

Domino Park’s Saturday fitness series runs along the Williamsburg waterfront with classes from 10:00–11:00am. The rotating schedule includes Pilates, yoga, boxing, and dance cardio — with views of the East River and the Manhattan skyline as your backdrop. It’s one of the more scenic free workout spots in the city.

Address: Domino Park, 325 Kent Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11249
How to get there: L train to Bedford Ave, then walk west along N 9th St to the waterfront.

What to Bring to Any Outdoor Class

May mornings can still dip into the upper 40s before warming to the low-to-mid 60s by afternoon. For early classes, dress in layers you can peel off as you warm up.

  • Layers: A light zip-up for the warmup, something breathable underneath
  • Water: At least 20oz — park fountains are not always close to class meeting spots
  • Mat: Helpful for yoga and Pilates on grass; optional for boot camps
  • Sunscreen: The May sun is stronger than it feels. Apply even on overcast days.

Pro Tips for Spring Park Fitness

Check conditions the night before. Weather in May can shift quickly. Most programs post updates on their social channels or the NYC Parks website when sessions are canceled due to rain.

Start where you are. Every class listed here is open to all fitness levels. The outdoor setting makes even tough workouts more achievable — fresh air, natural light, and the city around you. Show up once and you’ll be back.

The city is your gym. This week is a good week to prove it.
