Yankees Baseball, Spring Birding, and Community Conservation
The Bronx is welcoming spring with open arms this weekend. From the crack of the bat at Yankee Stadium to quiet mornings watching migratory birds along the waterfront, there’s a surprising range of things to do across the borough this April 4-5. Here’s your weekend rundown.
Yankees vs. Marlins at Yankee Stadium — Saturday, April 4
Baseball season is here, and the New York Yankees host the Miami Marlins on Saturday at Yankee Stadium, 1 East 161st Street. Early-season games at the Stadium carry a special energy — the weather is finally cooperating, the crowd is hungry for baseball, and there’s nothing quite like an afternoon in the Bronx with a cold drink and a hot dog. Check the Yankees website for game time and ticket availability. If you’re taking the subway, the B, D, or 4 trains will drop you right at 161st Street-Yankee Stadium station.
Spring Birding at Soundview Park — Saturday, April 4
The spring migration is underway, and Soundview Park is one of the Bronx’s best spots to see it. A free birding event runs from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. along the park’s waterfront trails. Experienced birders and curious beginners are both welcome — guides will help you spot and identify species passing through the area. Soundview Park is located along the Bronx River near the intersection of Soundview Avenue and Seward Avenue.
Ecological Restoration Volunteer Day — Saturday, April 4
Following the birding session, Soundview Park hosts an ecological restoration volunteer event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is hands-on conservation work — weeding, planting, and helping maintain the park’s natural areas. It’s free, open to all ages, and a great way to connect with neighbors while doing something meaningful for your local green space. No prior experience needed, and tools are provided.
Tree Stewardship at Rev. T. Wendell Foster Park — Saturday, April 4
If you’re looking for another way to give back, join the environmental revitalization event at Rev. T. Wendell Foster Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers help steward young trees by weeding, aerating soil, adding mulch, and cleaning up debris. It’s a peaceful Saturday morning activity that directly benefits your neighborhood. The park is located in the Morrisania section of the Bronx.
NYBG Bronx Green-Up Compost Conference — Saturday, April 4
The New York Botanical Garden’s Bronx Green-Up program hosts its annual compost mini-conference from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Learn about local composting efforts, participate in hands-on workshops, and connect with fellow Bronxites working to make the borough greener. NYBG is located at 2900 Southern Boulevard. This is a full-day event, so you can drop in for a session or stay for the whole thing.
Free Trees from NYRP
The New York Restoration Project is distributing 3,750 free trees across all five boroughs starting April 4 and running through May 16. Bronx residents can sign up through NYRP’s website to claim a tree for their block. Given the Bronx’s ongoing push for more green space and tree canopy coverage, this is an opportunity worth taking advantage of.
