Queens New Openings: Gyro City, Ice Cream Pizza, and More

Queens continues to prove that it’s the most delicious borough in New York City. This April, a fresh batch of restaurants, cafés, and food halls are opening across the borough — and two major restaurant weeks are giving you even more reasons to eat your way through the neighborhoods.

Gyro City Grand Opening in Astoria

Gyro City is bringing authentic Greek street food to 37-06 30th Avenue in Astoria, and the grand opening is set for April 25. Following a successful soft opening, the restaurant is already impressing the neighborhood with grilled skewers, pita sandwiches, and halloumi fries made with organic produce and imported pita bread. This is the brand’s second location after Brooklyn, and Astoria’s vibrant Greek community is clearly the right home for it. Call 347-396-5153 for details.

The Screen Door Scoops Into Sunnyside

Sunnyside just got sweeter with the arrival of The Screen Door at 48-19 Skillman Avenue. This old-fashioned ice cream shop is serving sundaes, banana splits, egg creams, and classic frozen treats alongside creative specialties like ice cream pizza and ice cream nachos. If that sounds like pure joy, that’s because it is.

Freddy’s Pizza Brings 1961 Back to Astoria

Freddy’s Pizza has expanded from its original 1961 Whitestone location to 25-27 Broadway in Astoria. The new spot features old-school booths and checkered tile floors that transport you straight to a different era, along with classic New York pizza and heroes like The Freddy sandwich. It’s nostalgic in the best way. Reach them at 347-461-6114.

L’oro Espresso Bar and Brooklyn Bread Cafe Join Astoria

Astoria’s café scene keeps growing. L’oro Espresso Bar at 21-75 35th Street is serving iced lattes and matcha alongside Italian bombolones — filled donuts in flavors like pistachio and Nutella — plus breakfast croissants. Meanwhile, Brooklyn Bread Cafe has opened its fourth location at 29-02 Ditmars Boulevard with freshly baked bread, bagels, and gourmet sandwiches including the loaded Brooklyn Combo with prosciutto and chicken cutlet. Vegan options are available too.

Wonder Food Hall Opens in Forest Hills

The fast-growing Wonder food hall concept has opened its latest Queens outpost at 71-14 Austin Street in Forest Hills. The hall brings dozens of restaurant brands together under one roof, following successful openings in Astoria, Ridgewood, and Jackson Heights. A ribbon-cutting ceremony last week officially welcomed the neighborhood to a new way of eating out — or ordering in.

Two Restaurant Weeks to Plan Around

Mark your calendars for two can’t-miss dining events. City Island Restaurant Week kicks off today, April 7 through April 12, with 15 restaurants participating across the Bronx’s seaside gem (more on that in our Bronx Beat). And starting April 20, Sunnyside Restaurant Week returns for a two-week run through May 4, organized by the Sunnyside Shines BID. Over 50 restaurants are offering three-course meals for $35, featuring everything from Latin American and South Asian fare to European bistros. New participants include Coba Pizzeria, Latino Bites, and Makina Cafe.
