The week in one paragraph: Monday opens cool behind a backdoor cold front (mid-70s). Tuesday and Wednesday bring the first real taste of summer — mid-80s in the city, 90s in northern NJ and the Lower Hudson Valley. Wednesday afternoon a cold front sweeps through with showers and thunderstorms. The back half of the week cools down to the 60s, with a chance of light rain Friday and Saturday. Memorial Day Monday May 25 looks pleasant in the low 70s.

The Three Days That Matter Most
Tuesday May 19 — the heat day
This is the day to plan around. The NWS New York office, in this morning’s Area Forecast Discussion, expects highs Tuesday “in the lower and mid 90s from NYC and points north and west,” with overnight lows in the upper 60s that won’t let the city cool down. Forecasters explicitly flag record high minimum temperatures as a real possibility — that means subway platforms, top-floor apartments, and asphalt playgrounds will all be running hot before sunrise. South-shore Brooklyn and Queens beaches will be the coolest spots, often by 15-20°F, because of onshore flow off 50s°F ocean water.
No heat advisory was in effect at publish time. NWS criteria for the NYC area is generally a heat index of 95°F+ for two or more consecutive days; current dewpoints don’t support that yet. We’ll publish a surge update if NWS upgrades.
Wednesday May 20 — the storm window
A faster-moving cold front means the storm window has tightened. Expect dry, hot conditions through early afternoon, with showers and scattered thunderstorms most likely between 2 p.m. and midnight. The severe-weather threat is currently low, per the NWS discussion. Outdoor schools events Wednesday afternoon (including the NYC DOE evening parent-teacher conferences for high schools, K-12, and 6-12 schools) should plan indoor backup.
Thursday May 21 — the reset
Behind the front, highs collapse to the upper 60s. Pack a jacket Thursday morning if you commute outdoors. The cool, drier air settles in for the rest of the week.
Commute Prep — Subway, Bus, Bridge, Bike
Subway
Heat is the main subway story this week. On Tuesday and Wednesday, station platforms in older underground stations (most of the IRT and IND lines) will be 10-15°F hotter than the street, with poor air circulation. Trains themselves are air-conditioned. Avoid waiting more than 5-10 minutes on a platform if you can help it — use the MTA TrainTime app or new.mta.info to time your arrival.
Standard weekday subway service is in effect Monday through Friday. The 2, 3, 4, 5, and A lines all have routine planned-work alerts in the Bronx and Brooklyn — none are full reroutes — so leave a few extra minutes if you’re transferring at Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr or 149 St-Grand Concourse. Always check new.mta.info before you leave.
Buses
No weather-driven reroutes expected. The X27 and X28 commuter buses to Manhattan from Staten Island have an active northbound detour around Madison Av/E 25th St (Detour alert id lmm:alert:536935 in the MTA real-time feed); SI commuters who use those routes should add 5-10 minutes.
Bridges and tunnels
Wednesday afternoon thunderstorm window is the main concern for the Verrazzano, GWB, RFK, Throgs Neck, and the river crossings — high winds can briefly close upper levels. If you have a Wednesday-afternoon airport run, build in 30 extra minutes.
Cycling
Monday and Thursday are the best riding days of the week. Tuesday is rideable but get out early (before 10 a.m.) or late (after 7 p.m.) to dodge the worst heat. Wednesday — ride in the morning only; don’t get caught in the afternoon storms.
NYC Operations This Week
- Alternate Side Parking: In effect every day Monday May 18 through Friday May 22, and Tuesday-Friday next week. The next planned ASP suspension is Memorial Day, Monday May 25, then again Wednesday May 27 for Eid al-Adha. (Source: NYC 311 ASP article KA-01011.)
- DSNY garbage: Normal pickup schedule all week. No holidays affecting collection. Memorial Day Monday May 25 will cause a one-day collection delay for the rest of that week.
- NYC DOE schools: Open Monday through Friday. Wednesday May 20 has evening parent-teacher conferences for high schools, K-12, and 6-12 schools. No early dismissal on the calendar for that event. Memorial Day Monday May 25: schools closed. (Source: NYC DOE 2025-2026 calendar.)
What to Decide Now
- If you have a Tuesday outdoor event: Move it to Monday or Thursday if you can. Tuesday’s heat will be the highest the city has seen in 2026.
- If you have a Wednesday-afternoon outdoor commitment: Have an indoor Plan B. The storm window is real.
- If you’re picking up a school-age kid Wednesday evening: Bring an umbrella to parent-teacher conferences. Most of the storm action is after 2 p.m.
- If you don’t have an air conditioner installed yet: Get it in Monday. Tuesday it will already be uncomfortable, and overnight Tuesday will not cool down.
- If you’re planning a weekend trip out east: Saturday looks showery (low 60s). Sunday May 24 and Monday Memorial Day look better as the front clears.
- If you bike-commute: Monday and Thursday are your friends. Tuesday morning early. Skip Wednesday afternoon.
What NWS Is Watching Beyond Sunday
The NWS New York office notes “a chance for rain next weekend as the frontal boundary returns to the north” — meaning the showery pattern may stick around through Memorial Day weekend. The forecast confidence drops off after Thursday; we’ll re-evaluate in mid-week.
Cold-Water Safety (Still Active)
NWS continues a cold-water safety message for the harbor and nearshore waters. Water temperatures are in the lower 50s°F — well below survival range without a wetsuit. Kayakers, paddleboarders, and small-boat operators should plan accordingly: hypothermia onset is fast in 50°F water, even on a 90°F land-temperature day Tuesday.
