Most people in Staten Island know the nonprofits that show up for them — the food pantries, the senior centers, the youth programs, the cultural institutions. Fewer know the organization that quietly works to keep all of those groups standing.
Nonprofit Staten Island is celebrating 20 years in 2026, and the occasion is worth a closer look — because the work this organization does is what makes everything else possible.
What Nonprofit Staten Island Does
Founded in 2005 as the Staten Island Not for Profit Association, Nonprofit Staten Island represents more than 150 member organizations across the borough. Its members range from cultural institutions and faith-based groups to health care providers, senior services organizations, youth programs, and local community groups.
The organization’s job is not to deliver direct services. It is to make the organizations that deliver direct services stronger. That means workshops, coalition-building, advocacy, networking, and practical training — things that are often underfunded at individual nonprofits but that are essential to keeping them running well.
Year-round programming includes affinity groups that connect nonprofit leaders around shared challenges, a Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD) program that prepares the borough’s nonprofit network for emergency response, and a Community Climate Corps (CCC) initiative equipping organizations and local leaders to address climate risks. The organization also runs a “Nonprofit on the Go” program that brings resources and training directly to organizations instead of requiring them to come to a central location.
Twenty Years of Impact
Executive Director Tatiana Sabatelli has led the organization through its rebranding in 2022 — when it shifted from SINFPA to the cleaner Nonprofit Staten Island name — and into this milestone year. The 2022 rebrand, she has said, was about more than a new logo: “It’s about restrategizing to ensure every Staten Island voice is heard and served.”
To mark the 20th anniversary, Nonprofit Staten Island has launched a “20 for 20” campaign — an effort to raise $20,000 for the next 20 years of nonprofit leadership, resilience, and equity on the island. Donations made through the campaign are matched 2-to-1 through the Staten Island Foundation’s Diamond Matching Grant Program, meaning every dollar raised is effectively tripled.
Join Them in June
The Annual Meeting of Members is scheduled for June 4, 2026, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM on Staten Island. It is open to member organizations and the broader community, and registration is now available on the Nonprofit Staten Island website. Whether you work in the nonprofit sector, volunteer with one of their member organizations, or simply want to understand how Staten Island takes care of itself, it is a worthwhile event to attend.

The health of Staten Island’s community depends on the health of the organizations doing the work. Nonprofit Staten Island’s 20-year milestone is a reminder of just how much infrastructure goes into making a borough function — and how much of it operates without much fanfare.
