Free Outdoor Fitness in NYC This June: Your Complete Guide to Working Out in the City’s Parks
June is here and NYC’s free outdoor fitness scene is in full swing. From Shape Up NYC classes in all five boroughs to Healthy on the Hudson at Hudson River Park and Waterfront Workouts at Brooklyn Bridge Park, here’s how to stay active outside without spending a dollar.

Summer is the season when New York City becomes one giant outdoor gym. With temps in the low 70s and the parks bursting with life, there’s never been a better time to ditch the indoor treadmill and take your workout outside. The best part? Most of the city’s best outdoor fitness options are completely free.

Shape Up NYC: Free Classes in All Five Boroughs

The NYC Parks Department’s Shape Up NYC program is the city’s largest free outdoor fitness offering, running from late spring through fall with hundreds of weekly classes across all five boroughs. Classes include yoga, Zumba, cardio bootcamp, step aerobics, and Zumba Gold (a low-impact Latin dance fitness option). No registration required for most sessions — just show up.

Classes are held at parks, recreation centers, and community spaces throughout the city. For the full schedule of times and locations, visit nycgovparks.org/events/shape-up-nyc. The site lists over 1,400 events running from now through October 2026.

Healthy on the Hudson at Hudson River Park

One of the city’s best waterfront fitness series is back for summer 2026. Healthy on the Hudson offers free 60-minute outdoor classes along the Hudson River waterfront, led by trainers from Chelsea Piers Fitness, obé Fitness, and PureGym. Classes run June through September and are open to all fitness levels.

The weekly schedule includes:

  • Conditioning (led by PureGym) — Mondays at 6:30 PM at Pier 25 (near N Moore St)
  • HIIT (led by Chelsea Piers Fitness) — Tuesdays at 6:30 PM at Pier 46
  • Yoga (led by Chelsea Piers Fitness) — Thursdays at 6:30 PM at Pier 64

All classes are free and suitable for all skill levels. Registration is required and space is limited — sign up early at hudsonriverpark.org. Bring your own mat for yoga.

Getting there: Hudson River Park runs along the West Side from Chambers St to 59th St. Pier 25 is accessible via the 1 train to Franklin St; Pier 46 via the 1 to Christopher St; Pier 64 via the 1 to 23rd St.

Brooklyn Bridge Park Waterfront Workouts

Brooklyn Bridge Park runs its popular Waterfront Workouts series from May through September. All classes are free and all-level, with registration and a waiver required. The backdrop — Manhattan skyline, the bridges, the water — makes this one of the most scenic workout spots in the city.

Classes are held at Pier 2, accessible via the A/C/G to High St–Brooklyn Bridge or the F to York St. Check brooklynbridgepark.org for the current schedule and registration links.

Solstice in Times Square: Mind Over Madness Yoga

Mark your calendar for June 21 (Summer Solstice): the 21st annual Mind Over Madness Yoga event returns to Times Square. This iconic NYC tradition brings hundreds of yogis to the middle of one of the world’s most famous intersections for free yoga classes throughout the day. Classes run from early morning into the evening, led by instructors from studios across the city.

The event is free and open to the public. Bring your own mat. Times Square is accessible via nearly every subway line — 1/2/3/7/N/Q/R/W to Times Sq–42nd St.

Free Outdoor Fitness Equipment in NYC Parks

Don’t want a class? NYC Parks has installed free outdoor fitness equipment in dozens of parks across all five boroughs. These stations typically include chin-up bars, parallel bars, ab benches, and more. You can work out at your own pace with no schedule required.

Find a full map of fitness equipment locations at nycgovparks.org. Some well-equipped spots include Riverside Park (Manhattan), McCarren Park (Brooklyn), and Flushing Meadows–Corona Park (Queens).

What to Bring for Outdoor Workouts

  • Water: Bring more than you think you need. June heat plus exercise burns through hydration fast.
  • Sunscreen: UV index climbs quickly in June, even on cloudy days.
  • Appropriate shoes: Running shoes for cardio and HIIT; bare feet or grip socks for yoga on grass.
  • Yoga mat: Required for yoga classes at Hudson River Park and Solstice events.
  • Light layers: Evening classes along the water can get breezy — a light zip-up goes a long way.

Safety Note

As temperatures rise through June, be mindful of heat during outdoor workouts. Schedule high-intensity sessions for early morning or evening when it’s cooler. If you’re exercising during a heat advisory, the city opens cooling centers at public libraries and community centers — check locations at nyc.gov/coolcenters. Stay hydrated, take breaks in the shade, and listen to your body.

The city is your gym. June is the best time to use it.
