The best fitness deal in New York City is still zero dollars — you just have to bring your own mat. Two of the city’s signature free outdoor yoga programs are spinning back up over the next three weeks, and both run all summer long. If you’ve been waiting for an excuse to take your practice outside, this is the week to mark your calendar.
Bryant Park Yoga: Tuesdays and Wednesdays, May 27 through September 16
Bryant Park’s free yoga series, presented this year by Halara, returns Wednesday, May 27 and runs through September 16. The format is the same one that’s made it a Midtown lunch-break legend for more than a decade: Tuesday mornings at 10 a.m. on the Upper Terrace, and Wednesday evenings at 6 p.m. on the Lawn. Each class is one hour, suitable for all levels, and totally free — but you do need to register in advance for each individual session at bryantpark.org/activities/yoga.
The opening night on May 27 will be taught by Nico Sarani. If you can’t get to Midtown, Bryant Park livestreams Wednesday evening sessions on Instagram @bryantparknyc, which is a nice option if it rains or if you’d rather practice from your living room.
How to get there
Bryant Park sits between 40th and 42nd Streets, 5th and 6th Avenues. Take the B, D, F, or M to 42nd St–Bryant Park, or the 7 to 5th Av–Bryant Park. Penn Station and Grand Central are both a short walk.
Prospect Park Yoga: Thursdays on the Long Meadow, June 4 through August 27
Brooklyn’s version starts a week later. The Prospect Park Alliance partners with Brooklyn Flow to host free Thursday evening sessions on the North Long Meadow from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., beginning June 4 and running through August 27. Rotating instructors from Brooklyn studios lead the class, so the vibe shifts week to week — vinyasa one Thursday, slower hatha the next.
Registration is also required and is handled through Brooklyn Flow at brooklynflow.com/prospectparkyoga. Closest park entrances are Garfield Place at Prospect Park West or Grand Army Plaza.
How to get there
Take the 2 or 3 to Grand Army Plaza, the F or G to 15th St–Prospect Park, or the B, Q, or S to Prospect Park station. From any of those, the Long Meadow is a short walk into the park.
What to bring
- A mat — neither program loans them out. A thin travel mat works fine and rolls into a tote.
- Water — fountains exist in both parks but you’ll want your own bottle, especially on warm Wednesday evenings.
- A towel for the lawn at Bryant Park or any patches of dew at Prospect Park.
- Sunscreen for the Tuesday 10 a.m. Bryant Park sessions on the Upper Terrace.
- A light layer for Wednesday 6 p.m. or Thursday 7 p.m. classes — even mid-summer NYC evenings can cool off fast once the sun drops behind the buildings.
Pro tips from regulars
- Register early. Bryant Park Wednesday evenings fill within hours when the weather forecast looks good. The page opens roughly a week before each class.
- Arrive 15 minutes early. Both lawns operate first-come, first-served for mat placement once you’re checked in. Center-front isn’t always the best spot — it’s hot in the sun and you can hear traffic. Look for the side or back of the lawn near greenery.
- Build a free fitness route. Pair Bryant Park yoga with a free Shape Up NYC class earlier or later in the week — there are more than 1,500 Shape Up NYC sessions scheduled between now and October across all five boroughs. Browse the full list at nycgovparks.org/events/shape-up-nyc.
- Rain plan. Bryant Park sometimes cancels and posts to Instagram a few hours out. Prospect Park’s policy is rain-or-shine until lightning, so check the radar before you leave Brooklyn.
The bottom line
Two free yoga programs, two boroughs, three nights a week, plus a Tuesday morning option for the early risers. From May 27 through Labor Day weekend, there is essentially no reason to pay for a studio class in NYC if you’re willing to roll out a mat under the sky. The city is your studio — go claim a spot on the lawn.
