Heckscher Playground is Central Park’s largest and oldest playground—a 1.8-acre destination on the West Side between 61st and 63rd Streets that draws families from across the five boroughs and beyond. Whether you’re packing a stroller, wrangling a toddler, or planning a birthday outing for a group, here is everything you need to know before you arrive.
Address & Location
Heckscher Playground is located on the West Side of Central Park, between 61st and 63rd Streets. The primary entrance is through the central breezeway of the Heckscher Building, which faces Central Park South. The playground sits near the southern end of the park, making it one of the most accessible from Midtown Manhattan.
Central Park stretches from 59th Street to 110th Street, between Fifth Avenue and Central Park West.
Park Hours
Central Park is open 6:00 AM to 1:00 AM daily. Heckscher Playground is accessible during park hours. Families planning an early morning visit will find the park quieter and cooler before 9:00 AM—a practical window for summer visits.

What’s at the Playground
Built in 1927 and completely rebuilt by the Central Park Conservancy in 2006, Heckscher Playground spans 1.8 acres—making it the largest of Central Park’s 21 playgrounds. The space features:
- Swings (including adaptive swings for children with disabilities)
- Slides
- A maze-like climber with adventure-style interconnected features
- An extensive water spray feature—popular on warm days
- Natural rock outcroppings that double as play features
- A stunning view of the Midtown Manhattan skyline
The playground’s adventure-style design, originally created by architect Richard Dattner and updated in 2006, encourages imaginative and exploratory play. It is one of several adventure-style playgrounds in Central Park, alongside East 72nd Street Playground, Ancient Playground, Tarr Family Playground, Adventure Playground, and Billy Johnson Playground.
Restrooms
Restrooms are located inside the Heckscher Building, directly accessible through the playground’s main entrance. Hours: 6:30 AM – 9:00 PM daily, year-round. Restrooms are wheelchair accessible.
Nearby backup restrooms: The Chess & Checkers House (Mid-Park) and the West 61st Street Public Restroom are the nearest alternatives when the Heckscher restrooms are closed or temporarily unavailable.
Parking
Street parking along Central Park South (59th Street) and the surrounding blocks is metered and competitive, especially on weekends. Several parking garages are available near the southern end of the park:
- The area around Columbus Circle (59th Street & 8th Avenue) has multiple commercial garages
- Garages along West 57th and West 61st Streets on the west side are within a few blocks’ walk
Subway access: The N/Q/R/W and 4/5/6 trains stop at 59th Street–Lexington Avenue (East Side); the A/B/C/D and 1 trains stop at 59th Street–Columbus Circle (West Side). Both are roughly a 10-minute walk to Heckscher Playground.
Permits: Large Groups, Events & School Outings
A special events permit is required for any gathering of 20 or more people in a NYC park. This includes school picnics, birthday parties, field days, and organized group activities. NYC Parks requires permit applications to be submitted at least 21 days before the event.
How to apply: Submit your application online through the NYC Parks e-Apply portal at nyceventpermits.nyc.gov/Parks/. You will need to create an account if you haven’t used the system before.
For permit questions, visit nycgovparks.org/permits or call NYC Parks at (212) NYC-PARK.
Note on BBQ and open fires: Open fires and charcoal grills are not permitted in Central Park. If your group gathering requires food, plan to use vendor or catering services, or choose a borough park that has designated grill areas.
Dog Rules & Off-Leash Hours
Dogs are welcome in most of Central Park, but leashing rules are specific:
Leash required: 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM daily.
Off-leash permitted: 6:00 AM – 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM – 1:00 AM in most park areas.
Important: Even during off-leash hours, dogs must remain leashed in several designated areas including the Arthur Ross Pinetum, the Bridle Path, the Ramble, Strawberry Fields, Conservatory Garden, and any area where posted signs require leashing.
All dogs in NYC parks must carry a valid NYC license tag and current rabies vaccination tag. Owners are required to clean up after their dogs at all times.
Note for playground visitors: Dogs are not permitted inside playground enclosures. If you’re visiting Heckscher Playground with your dog, you will need to keep your dog outside the play area or bring a second adult to supervise.
