The Bronx has a full calendar of community-driven events this June — from an evening tree-planting action in Mott Haven to a historic walking tour through Longwood and a free community art gathering in Norwood. Whether you live in the South Bronx, the Grand Concourse corridor, or the northeast neighborhoods near Pelham Bay, there are meaningful things happening close to home this month. Here’s your guide.
South Bronx Unite Local Action Committee — Thursday, June 4
One of the most hands-on community events of the month is South Bronx Unite’s June 2026 Local Action Committee meeting, happening on Thursday, June 4 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM at 128 Lincoln Avenue, The Bronx, NY 10454 (in Mott Haven).
This isn’t a typical sit-and-listen meeting. South Bronx Unite is mobilizing residents to plant native perennials and willows in tree pits along Lincoln Avenue that the NYC Parks Department has deemed unsuitable for full trees. The goal: reclaim underused tree pits and increase the neighborhood’s canopy — critical in a part of the city where green space is scarce and summer heat is severe.
All tools will be provided. Gloves will be handed out. Food will be served. No experience is necessary — just show up ready to get your hands in the dirt. Spanish and English interpretation will both be available in person.
This is part of South Bronx Unite’s ongoing Tree Pit Initiative, running in collaboration with AreshEarth throughout the summer in Mott Haven and Port Morris. If you want to participate or have questions, email melissa@southbronxunite.nyc or david@southbronxunite.nyc.
South Bronx Unite is a sponsored project of The Mott Haven–Port Morris Community Land Stewards, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Learn more about the event and register at southbronxunite.org.
Longwood Historic Walking Tour — Saturday, June 6
The Bronx County Historical Society is leading a Longwood Historic Walking Tour on Saturday, June 6, beginning at 11:00 AM. Meet at 839 Prospect Avenue (in front of the Dunkin’), The Bronx, NY 10459.
The guided walk, led by BCHS and historian David Herszenson, takes you through Longwood — a South Bronx neighborhood named for a 19th-century estate that urbanized rapidly at the turn of the last century, attracting immigrants from Manhattan’s tenements, followed by Caribbean families mid-century. Along the way you’ll encounter a historic district of early 20th-century homes, public art depicting local residents, century-old former synagogues, a Carnegie library, and what’s described as the oldest Latin music store in New York City.
Tickets are $20 for BCHS members and $25 for non-members. Purchase tickets and learn more at bronxhistoricalsociety.org/longwood.
Piece by Piece Community Art Gathering — Saturday, June 6
Also on June 6, the Bronx County Historical Society hosts a free community art-making event from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM in the backyard of the Museum of Bronx History, 3266 Bainbridge Avenue, The Bronx, NY 10467.
Participants will paint small pre-drawn wooden canvases that will come together to form one larger collective image — a mural-by-the-people approach to community art. Food and music will be on hand. No registration is required, and the event is free and open to everyone.
The Museum of Bronx History is located in Norwood, near the border with Woodlawn. The museum itself is open Saturdays 10:00 AM–4:00 PM and Sundays 1:00–5:00 PM. Suggested admission is $3 for children and seniors, $5 for adults. NYPL, Queens Public Library, and Brooklyn Public Library cardholders can visit for free via Culture Pass NYC.
Virtual Genealogy Workshop for Black and Brown Communities — Tuesday, June 16
The Bronx County Historical Society is also hosting a free virtual genealogy workshop on Tuesday, June 16 at 7:00 PM Eastern via Zoom. Led by educator Talaya Robinson-Dancy, the two-hour session is designed for Black and Brown communities and focuses on uncovering family stories through digital archives and oral history — with an emphasis on navigating archival racism and the systemic erasure of marginalized histories.
No prior experience is necessary. Registration is free at bronxhistoricalsociety.org/ancestors.
Coming in July: New Permanent Exhibit Opening at Museum of Bronx History
Mark your calendar now: the Museum of Bronx History will open a major new permanent exhibit on Wednesday, July 1, 2026 at 6:00 PM. The Bronx: Crucible of Liberty — Radicals, Runaways, & Revolutionaries, 1600–1850 tells the largely unknown story of how the area that is now the Bronx shaped the American struggle for freedom. The opening reception is part of the society’s America 250 programming marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Details at bronxhistoricalsociety.org.
Find Your Bronx Community Board
The Bronx has 12 community boards covering every part of the borough. Boards are wrapping up their June meetings — the final month of the regular season before summer. If you want to weigh in on local zoning, development, or public safety issues in your neighborhood, find your board through the Bronx Borough President’s office.
As the summer heats up, it’s also a good time to bookmark the city’s cooling resources. Our NYC Summer Heat Safety guide covers cooling centers, heat alerts, and how to sign up for notifications — information that’s especially relevant for Mott Haven and Port Morris, which consistently record the borough’s highest heat-island temperatures. And for families with older relatives, our guide to free summer programs at NYC Older Adult Centers lists Bronx locations with meals, activities, and cooling resources.
